There's basically no chance that it would actually "explode." The gas in the underground tanks is designed to be sequestered from air, and oxygen that would actually make the fumes that are flammable. You might see a few fireballs from any trace fumes in the air, but it's unlikely to be a real hazard any further than the block the station is on.It doesn't change the facts on self defense, but what would have happened if Rosenbaum and friends had successfully managed to push a burning dumpster into a gas pump? Everyone seems to assume "earth shattering kaboom" but there's got to be more safety measures in place in a gas station than that, right?
That being said, it's still obviously dangerous and rioters shouldn't be given free agency to burn down whatever they want. It's such a ridiculous double standard that the FBI are tracking down and imprisoning all the ancient boomers who walked into the white house, but they never even attempted to arrest any members of the mobs actively burning down cities, even going so far as "losing" HD drone footage to have an excuse not to.
