Apparently it has evolved multiple times according to this evil bigoted transphobic Pacific Standard article (I am sending the TERF author a death threat right after I write this post and demanding that he loses his job):I mean shit, I don’t know why some people are men and some women either. “Why” suggests a reason, not a cause.
The far more interesting question is how the binary system of sex came to evolve in most higher animals. Was it selective pressure? Was it more fortuitous for the species to only have half the population give birth once birth got more complicated than spit out some eggs and swim away? Or maybe it was competition that drove it and those that did the competing lost the ability to give birth themselves?
So much of biology is tied up in reproduction and therefore reproductive sex. To assume that biologists are saying these things just to hurt some trans feelings is absurd.
