Do Xi Xing Pei and Kim Jong Un seem like lefties to you? It's extremely common for a tyrant to co-opt some movement that gets them the support of the people to seize control, and then immediately abandon the ideals they pretended to espouse once they have it. The tyrannical wing of the government seems leftist now, but you can already see the cracks in their facade, as they funnel trillions not into the pockets of poor illegals and welfare moms but their own coffers and to bribing foreign governments. They pretend to be leftist because right now the leftists are the easiest to control and radicalize into what they want. Should they ever fully gain the control they want in the name of 'stopping those wrong think bad guys', they'll drop the facade completely. For immediate evidence of this, I point to how the conservatives had all the strength in the early 00s, and all the 'progressive, liberal' people these days insisted that 'marriage should be for a man and a woman only!'. When being conservative meant they could take away freedoms and torture people and get support, that's what they did. When W fell out of favor, they switched to appealing to the progressives so they could ban books and shoot citizens while looking like the good guys. As the conservatives dig in their heels to resist the authoritarianism, those elements push into liberalism and encourage political polarization all the more, but it's not because they actually believe in leftist ideals, it's because it's the side most likely to allow them to gain more power and strip more freedoms.
