There's really nothing 'hardware intensive' about an Open World Dark Souls. It's not gonna require a huge bump in processing power to play it if they just scale back the graphics options slightly. How are the graphics? I have a weird affinity for Dark Souls 1's graphics, even with the dated aspects, it just looks really appealing to me.
Sekiro was a similar deal where despite not being as advanced as western AAA games, it still just looked really pleasing to the eye.
If I had to explain what it is it's that they looked like juiced up PS2 games... in a good way, they just have a certain "look" that evokes how Japanese developed PS2 games often looked, but with more modern enhancements.
From clips and images I've seen Elden Ring looks pretty good, but I do find myself wishing this was next gen only.
I really doubt this. People are just thirsting for muh Bloodborne twist again, but they forget that the "I'M LOSING MY MIND" shit didn't come out of left-field. Amygdalae were in the demo, the Hunter's Dream shows up in the first few minutes of gameplay. The moon is more indicative of glintstone magic's lore than anything to do with mechs. Not that the moon mightn't play a bigger factor later in the game, I'm positive it will. There have been rumours and wild speculation about Elden Ring setting.
Basically people are speculating that the game setting isn't really a dark fantasy one but a mech sci-fi one on a disc world. There is an alleged mid game twist similar to Bloodborne or Dark Souls where the player finds this out.
Miyazaki has also stated in a interview with vice where he says that he would like to make a game inspired by the anime Aura Battler Dunbine and Escaflowne both of which are mech fantasy shows. He has also talked about an old FromSoftware Dreamcast game called Frame Gride which is again in the mech fantasy genre.
People have also found a Elden Ring symbol on the in game moon and some of the item descriptions are very Bloodborne like.
To be fair, George R.R. Martin has done sci-fi in the past and we don't really know to what extent his involvement in the project is. FromSoft's history with mid game twists go all the way back to Dark Souls.I really doubt this. Besides, you'd have to imagine George R.R. Martin writing the mythology to incorporate anime mechas. I'm sorry, but anyone who buys this theory is an exceptional individual.
The only sci-fi I can think of were anthology sized short stories. His most famous had to have been the sapient Martian scorpions. To be fair, George R.R. I don't know about any of the more sci-fi stuff but I'm almost convinced that there will be one.
It has precedence in Fromsoft games at least. Towards the end of Shadow Tower Abyss you discover alien robots and find out that the tower came from space. and the opening area of the game has already been referenced before in Dark Souls 2. Come to think of it Dark Souls 2 has a recurring boss that gets dropped off and hovers like the mechs from Armored Core.To be fair, George R.R. George wrote cheesy 80s space thrillers. I don't care how much McDonalds funds you throw at him, he would not put his name on a high-fantasy game that turns into an autistic space gundam midway through. Also, I really don't think "Anor Londo is actually an illusion" exactly compares to the utter ass-pull that "leak" is proposing. That's just straight up bad storytelling. I can't imagine a world where that isn't a horrible idea.To be fair, George R.R. Martin has done sci-fi in the past and we don't really know to what extent his involvement in the project is. One can feasibly expect a modern, open-world game to be a collection of cool landmarks with little of note in-between apart from some lush visuals to make traveling from Point A to Point B at least aesthetically pleasing. That’s not the case with Elden Ring, though I must say it’s incredibly beautiful. No, From Software’s devs went the extra mile to ensure every moment is a crafted experience despite having exponentially more area to cover with the studio’s unique flair for making fantasy come alive.
A wooded lane isn’t simply window-dressing between waypoints but a set piece for learning the intricacies of stealth combat.
The entrance to a castle isn’t just an awe-inspiring example of the world’s architecture but the beginning of a breathless chase sequence.
Unless the Elden Ring demo condensed everything cool about the game into 1/12 the square mileage to fool us, I’m frankly worried about the developers. The attention to detail that must be going into making this ambitious project a reality is nothing short of herculean. As much as I’m anticipating Elden Ring’s arrival on February 25, I’m also more than happy to wait even longer if it means the folks at From Software aren’t killing themselves to get it out the door.
I appreciate the sentiment but the quotes you pasted in don't actually say anything and are pretty vague.
Though, back on topic, I found this pretty interesting tidbit about Elden Ring:
There's no shortage of footage to look through. It's not like they can cite the idea of interesting open-world encounters, if you want something tangible to back up the praise it exists in abundance. In a vacuum though, it certainly says something. Those are in fact things which happen in Elden Ring and that's already more than most open-world games can boast.I appreciate the sentiment but the quotes you pasted in don't actually say anything and are pretty vague.
Oh... oh Elden Ring I didn't see you there. Haaa!!!! OH~ Elden Ring yes!!
It sounds a lot like Breath of the Wild. Which would be pretty great if they can match the atmosphere and ambiance of that game. There's no shortage of footage to look through.
