Don't take this the wrong way, but you must be young or not following media 20 years ago. Trump was outspokenly for gay marriage since the early 2000's. Trump is literally a 90's Democrat in attitude, actions and personality. Trump has always been incredibly Laissez Faire on social issues. Let it sit in that almost all of his policies would of been common Democratic values in the 90's: Tough on crime, Strict on the border and even donated a decent chunk to the DNC during those years.

I have seen numbers like 5-7% of voters being LGBT. According to this article, Trump's support doubled in his reelection bid to 28% of that. Another article said that something like 45% of "queer men" voted for Trump.

I doubt these are the most accurate figures. I'd want to find another source besides this article.

With the RNC backing it, it wouldn't be a funds issue. If I were to guess a non-RINO cuck reason, they decided to try next time now that they know the state might be competitive. More legitimate-looking, also more likely to result in something.
