I was reading, or trying to read, a newspaper article about an organization, that tries to bring folks together, Democrats and Republicans, face to face, one on one, recorded on video. I try to imagine myself participating, talking, on camera, face to face, with a Trump voter, and, maybe I could do it, but…….

Were most of the officers defending the Capitol on the 6th of January, were most of them, Trump voters? I heard that some of them were. Were most of them?

Anytime I read about any election tactics, voter persuasion, campaign nuts and bolts, I keep thinking,

is there any way to persuade any Trump voters to vote for Democrats?

And, when I say Trump voters, I am talking about 74 million,

I said,

74 million voters who actually voted for Trump,

not in 2016, when he was not tested in office,

but in 2020, when he had laid himself bare, and we all could see who he was.

74 million voters, voted for that Trump, the naked, revealed, exposed Trump.

74 million.

There must be some way we can reach one or two million of those voters.

Have they no shame?

Have they no remorse?

They cannot see plain, clear things?

This is not like anything in our history.

This is a twisted nightmare, that actually happened.

Every time I read about any other thing, things we are told we must think about,

things we should do,

things we should think,

how we should unite, not divide, our country,

I think of those 74 million.

We should think complicated thoughts about complicated situations, because the world is complicated, and, overly simplistic thinking will not help.

But, every time I read anything complicated,

and try to see what we should do,

to make America, and the world, better, I keep going back to those

74 million voters,

and what they did,

in November of 2020.

Tell me, in the comments,

tell me, how do I deal with this?

Tell me, show me, links and quotes, about smart people, working day and night, to reach out to at least a few of those 74 million voters, and finally persuade them, to vote for Democrats.

Show me, links and quotes.

I have read nothing about any efforts to reach them.

(Except, maybe, the project I mentioned at the start of this rant.)

Or, explain to me, that I must turn away from all that, ignore all that, and just, sort of, hope?

I will answer my own question, a little bit:

Sometimes, in America, the voters sway over to a sensible Democrat,

Jimmy Carter,

Bill Clinton,

Barack Obama,

Joe Biden, who got 81 million votes, to defeat those 74 million voters.

So, do I just ignore those 74 million voters?

Do I just ignore them?

Will you just ignore this diary?

Maybe that is the best answer.

Oh well.

As someone who used to be a Rush Limbaugh Dittohead conservative when I was younger, here is the steps I went through on my path to becoming a liberal.


1. At age 16, I find porn and realize I prefer gay porn to straight porn. I switch over to gay porn exclusively. I also realize I’m a furry, a VERY left-wing group of people. I also realize that I don’t like protestant work ethic after watching lots of Star Trek TNG, and that I have desires to start an indie game dev company. If you sat me down in front of a list of policies that didn’t fit into the usual sound-bytes, I would have sounded liberal. In short, I am your target audience. Put a pin in this, we’ll come back to it.

2. At age 20, realize I am gay. Indoctrination is a VERY durable thing! (Put a second pin on this.) Being in the religious right, I have a spiritual crisis and make contact with the divine. Divine whispers to me it does not care.

3. Being a complete naive idiot, I actually tell my parents. They decide I have a demon and force me into a group exorcism. Next I was given a series of cassette tapes by Pat Robertson where he laughs at how great the genocides of the Old Testiment were. “Give us more daylight god! We have heathened to kill! Hahaha! I know I’m supposed to be talking about the love of christ, but sometimes it’s great when things got solved the old-school way.” It is here I learn to keep my damn mouth shut if I know what is good for me.

4. For the next four years, my furry connections gets me more and more left-wing friends. I spend a lot of time being exposed to left-wing ideas. I read things like Steve Kangas’s Liberal FAQ.

5. At age 24 I now consider myself a libertarian (NOT LIBERAL) and consider voting for democrats. I would not consider myself fully liberal for another four years.

When I talk with people who have a similar deconversion experience, the results are similar. So here are the obstacles you face:

- Indoctrination. This is strong enough that you can look at gay porn for four years before you realize you are gay.

- Punishment. Straying from the conservative path involves a lot of danger. You WILL be shunned. And if they have leverage over you, you WILL be attacked.

- Hostility. Remember that first pin from earlier? One thing I didn’t mention is that even if I was leaning liberal without realizing it, I still actively wanted liberals dead. That’s not hyperbole. When I was a teen, I joked with classmates about how great it would be if someone took out president Clinton. I thought the Oklahoma bomber was a hero. I am not proud of these moments.

- Not Listening. Remember that second pin? Story time. In American history class, I started reading the section on FDR. I read he was a popular president who was elected to four terms and helped to recover our economy from the great depression. At that point, I immediately stopped reading and skipped to the next session. You see, I listened to Rush Limbaugh, so I knew that republicans and conservatives were both popular and good for the economy. So obviously FDR was a Rush Limbaugh style conservative! My mind was completely closed to any new information and nothing anyone said made any dent, including the teacher. I know I lectured other students on this obvious truth, but I don’t remember if I actually lectured THAT teacher. Regardless, I was simply not listening listening to new information. I continued to believe this until I was 22 or 23. Repeat after me, indoctrination is a VERY durable thing.

So…

The deconversion starts from internal pressure, either from within the person or within the conservative structure. A person will slowly realize he is not in tune with conservatism. Eventually this causes people within his circle to turn on him, often in aggressive and hostile ways. After that, they are unplugged. Get them some liberal friends and wait another 4-8 years as they slowly switch sides. During the process, you’ll need to make sure nothing derails it. During my deconversion I nearly got groomed into joining a neo-nazi cell. If I had not found the webpages talking about Hitler in glowing terms before I was “ready”, I probably would have been at the capital on Jan 6.

So, let’s put your original question in context: How do you outreach to these people?

What you’re really asking is how can I replace, “a 8-12 year process involving intense pain, struggle, and personal growth, being backstabbed by friends and family, and a complete change of your entire social support structure”, with “a short conversation at the water cooler.”

No. It doesn’t work that way.

Fortunately, you have done no harm for trying. They aren’t listening to you anyway, because you are an outsider (and thus the enemy). As soon as you are out of sight, they forget you exist.

If you want to help, find someone who has already been turned on by their original circle of friends and relatives. Be their friend. Be patient with them the same way you would be patient with an abuse victim or a cult escapee. In four or five years, they’ll come around. Until then, they are not an ally and will not vote for your candidates. The fear and pain are still too raw, intense and internalized to overcome.

If you want more votes in the next election, then spend your effort countering voter suppression.

I just love that these delusional cunts with their gnashing of teeth can never actually articulate anything that changed negatively for them under Trump, they just hear talking points and adopt them as dogma as easily as a child believing the purple dinosaur on tv saying everything is great.

You should keep telling them that. Take out tv ads, billboards, etc. Talk about it on cable news, etc. Surely that will work.
