That probably happens way more often than you think. I used to volunteer with homeless people in a big German city. During a particularly harsh winter, I think 5 homeless people actually burned to death. I know one left a gas cooker on in his tent during the night. Was so drunk/high that he didn't notice it igniting the tent and him. Another severe alcoholic woman (I mean severe) burned to death because she fell asleep drunk with a lit candle under her blanket.

Tragic, but difficult to feel sorry for them since they have the option of spending the night in heated rooms with other homeless folk, but they refuse mostly because that means no drugs/alcohol for the night.

Being with other homeless folk is also quite harsh maybe not as much as the weather but still man is a wolf to man.

Bit more to the story: the wedding hall was supposed to be 2 story, but changed to 3 story late in development. This effectively meant they built the 3rd story on the roof of a 2 story building. Construction crew seems more at fault imo.

The more stupid move imo was this one.
A few weeks before the collapse, the wedding hall owners decided to remove the partitions. With the load path eliminated, the floor above began to sag several centimetres. The owners viewed the sagging floor primarily as a cosmetic problem, and attempted to level it with additional grout and fill. However, their approach not only failed to provide additional structural capacity, it also inadvertently introduced a new and significant dead load at the weakened area.

They were lucky that it was only two dozen killed, considering over 400 people fell through. And that the floors below were empty - I would imagine anyone down below would've died. If nothing else, it's a good argument in favor of small weddings, that was entirely too many people.

when people die on their feet, they go completely limp. It makes people seem to squat because you normally keep your knees at a slight bend, when your brain stops telling your muscles and tendons to hold, its going to collapse at the parts with the least amount of stress on them and gravity does the rest. If they're crouching/firing from the knee, they tend to hunch and roll

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) recently released surveillance and body camera footage regarding a critical incident that occurred on November 19th, 2021. The incident began after a tenant at the Covered Wagon Hotel contacted 9-1-1, informing police that another tenant, identified as 41-year-old Ajmal Amani, was armed with a knife and threatening people.

As indicated by the surveillance and body camera footage, officers assigned to SFPD responded to the 900 block of Folsom Street. Shortly after entering the residential hotel, officers communicated with Amani in an attempt to de-escalate the hostile situation. Unfortunately, none of these de-escalation tactics were effective. As responding officers held position along the hall; a short distance from Amani's room, Amani eventually emerged from his room, still armed with the knife. Amani charged at the officers, forcing an officer involved shooting.

Amani was provided medical aid from responding officers until medical transport arrived on the scene. He later succumbed to his injuries and was officially pronounced deceased at an area hospital.

After further researching who Amani was, Amani reportedly served as a U.S. Government contracted interpreter for the Navy SEALS, for nearly a decade in Afghanistan. Being wounded numerous times during his service, Amani sought a better life and eventually moved to the U.S. in 2014 on a visa. Reports have additionally indicated Amani struggled with severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) since his move to the U.S.

This however was not the first incident Amani encountered with the law since his move in 2014. In November of 2019, Amani reportedly crashed a woman's vehicle and used a box cutter against a city Park Ranger who responded to the incident. Because of this, Amani had faced attempted murder charges connected to the vehicle crash, however these charges were dismissed after Amani completed a mental health diversion in August.
