They were here before this country was colonized, thus the distaste for using the word " American." If I use the term " First Nation," many won't know what I'm referring to.

Americans most often describe themselves by their nation's name. The majority have come to accept the designation "Native American"
I am a "native American" . Dee is a "Native American" . See the difference? In the first case it's just an adjective saying that I was born here. In the second, it's part of a proper noun describing a member of a sovereign nation.

First Nations IS what Canadians use and I've seen it used by some tribes close to the Canadian border. I don't want to lose the original point in an argument on semantics. As an ally, I stand with Native people and observed Thursday, as a day of mourning. It's not the first year I did it and it won't be the last. It's really important that we talk about the subject, especially when the history books omit the topic of the genocide, in this country.

Dee Dorsty it is a very fine point that rests on whether "native" is capitalized or not. The trend I see among natives is to make the third Thursday in November a somber feast day, much like the Jewish Passover Seder, where we talk about our captivity , eat symbolic foods, get a little bit tipsy and give thanks for what we have now that we're free. All of the most vocal Native American activists I know primarily identify themselves by the name of their nations. Everything else is loaded with disagreements. AIM has pretty much established "American Indian" as the dominant catch all, but people who are conflicted with AIM will avoid the words American and Indian in their self descriptions, favoring indigenous over native and people over any state names. Most of the nations names are simply their word for "people" anyway. There is also some movement toward reclaiming "aboriginal" as well, especially in Australia, because that is Latin for "original people", which is a term traditionalists like to use.
The bottom line for us as the descendants of colonizers and refugees is to diligently expose the true facts of the fraud that the United States of America has always been; a warmongering plutocratic industrial fascist oligarchy formed by European aristocracy wanting to break away from the British crown. It's true history is a tale of lies, deceit, rape , murder and land theft that goes on in clandestine ways today.

"Indigenous"... Actually, there is no evidence that the pre-Colonial inhabitants of the continent now known as North America were actually "indigenous" to this land, and somewhat significant evidence that, in fact, they traversed what is no known as the Bering Straight to settle here.
Given their propensity to wage war on, steal land & resources from, kidnap and enslave each other - not to mention White Europeans - it's very likely they displaced other earlier inhabitants.
And I find the lamenting of "his" captivity hilarious, particularly in the context of a discussion with a person BAWWWing about being "displaced'... He and his may want to ask the earlier inhabitants of "the Promised Land" [the Canaanites, et al] about that subject. How, I wonder, do he and other members of the tribes "honor the traditional ways" of the Hivites, Girgashites, Canaanites, Amorites, Jebusites, Perizzites and Hittites?
