There's no evidence, so far, that the supa nu variant is more virulent than Delta Covid, for all we know it could be less deadly. Some interesting data is coming out though.

Moderna developed the vaccine against Wuhan Covid in 48 hours. Now for a variant it will take them 60-100 days? Color me skeptical. My take is there will be no vaccine update as there will be no point. Delta Covid is right now exploding in highly vaccinated countries, Singapore has just announced a near doubling in cases in 1 day. If they didn't update the vaccine for Delta there will be no updates end of period.Anyway talk that Omicron Covid is not related to Delta Covid but rather a variant that went extinct last year. First vaccines was not-well orientated to COVID-19, it was more than a vaccine effective (in some way, a lot not-so-effective than flu vaccine against targetet flu variant) against all coronaviruses. But some of now-spreading mutations of COVID-19 are too different from typicall coronavirus that this isn't working at all.
And it was possible to predict: none vaccine will be effective in 100%. Let say a vaccine is effective in 99,9%: so the remaining 0,1% of infected people will be OR unprotectable, OR will have a variation of virus that isn't effected by vaccine. The second ones will spread the new mutation.
Same logic with bacteria and antibiotic drugs: most of bacteria will die after using a good, stron enough antibiotic, some will remain and fill the emptiness.
In the dawn of pandemic they was two ways:
- ignore that, mourn the dead and have hope that impact will not be too big - and them will be suprised about the compund interests of deaths for dozens of years before COVID-19 will not be a threat,
- shut all traveling down, vaccine all of population, keep the travelling ban down, keep in isolation all of infected and hope that this will result in wiping off virus in few years (I was laughing from the beggining about two-weeks meme: ANY pandemic was that short, they last from couple of years to couple of decades always, or just kill part of population and stay as a typicall disease with the reamining people).
World choosed way of "we will little do both ways, multirack!, and we will take looses from both of them". Not a smart choose.

True story. I caught up with an old buddy I had not seen in awhile and we went to a few bars to try whiskies (he doesn't drink beer, so I had whisky with him). He told me that he's been sick and in pain since the vaccine shot he took in September. The only reason he actually went to get it is because his work made it mandatory, and they set up a trailer for all the employees to get shot at once. So he went in to get the shot, but I don't think he's ready to admit that the reason he is sick is because of the shot. So I didn't red pill him, because some times people need to be awoken slowly or they get very angry and defensive.

I'm a little less surprised with Omicron being from vaccinated travelers apparently instead of the original story of it being a chronic case from an AIDS patient. Normally the immunocompromised will very quickly die to opportunistic infections (and Covid can certainly be one) and perpetual chronic cases are very rare, from what I know normally the pathogen has to explicitly adapt in some way to pull that off. A good example is Typhi, which pulls of chronic carriage by gall bladder colonization, and that's a disease adapted purely for humans and only humans.
But yeah, with reports coming out worldwide it's already out there, if it renders vaccines entirely void at any rate they may as well bite the bullet purely to prevent actual economic crashes, taxes are already going up and programs are being shelved purely because governments desperately need the money now, and further lockdowns will worsen this.

The extant vaccines if not preventing breakthrough, certainly reduce severity of infection and thus deaths. I would not be surprised if we see the same with Omicron in that vaccinated people do indeed get the disease but also do not show overly severe symptoms.
However; if the above does turn true, then it will only require another additional mutation to then render the virus either more lethal or less lethal and it will have an evolutionary advantage to side-step the immune system to a point where vaccines to date are moot.
Yeah, they will produce a booster targeted to this virus strain; but it may not be actually needed; but we will not know for a few weeks anyways. they can not establish any data until they have seen a sufficient number of people vaccinated and unvaccinated experience the symptoms and die/live/live with no real symptoms/live with severe symptoms/live but shows lung damage etc. to get any real valuable data. 2-3 weeks should be plenty of time.
Really, we are all sitting back and waiting for the lab results to tell us what is what. My bet is still it will reduce effectiveness of the vaccine down to 60% at preventing contraction of Covid, but it still in all likelihood until proven otherwise is still going to prevent a great deal of severe symptoms and death.

The problem is the vaccines only target the S-protein, and very little (if at all anything) else.
A major change to the S-protein makes them worthless compared to existing natural infection, which still confers a versatile, polyvalent T-cell response against multiple key proteins on the virus.
