High Guardian Spice - Tumblr: The CalArt Anime

Someone rewrote both "trans" scenes in HGS.
The first rewrite: rather than just explaining his backstory like he’s reading a bullet point PowerPoint, this scene properly demonstrates character by having him react and express emotions as he’s telling his story, allowing the viewer to better empathize to his struggle. I love how she drew his longing eyes and body language in general, it's really good at conveying his feelings. It also made Rosemary far more cute, entertaining, and engaging as a character than anything as obnoxious as the actual show provides, it tells us that she has so much to learn about the world and the people around her without resorting to her just being a "quirky weirdo" that has her actions bite her on the ass constantly. The only thing I would do different is a more subtle way to say he's transgender, like "I wasn't always male", or something like that.

The second rewrite:
Snapdragon said:
Why would you want to be a boy?!
Prof. Calloway said:
The same reason that you want to be a girl you little shit!
^I'm not gonna lie, that legit made me laugh out loud. The biggest difference is the level of emotional connection between the audience and the characters. Jamie's more or less said the same thing as the original scene but she didn't have the words talked at the audience but had the audience sit down with the characters.
And just know that, whoever you decide to be, there are options for you.
Leaving the decision up to Snapdragon instead of railroading him into being trans?!

Raye, please hand your show over to Jamie, clearly she should be the one directing/writing it.

These rewrites have shown just how much of a dull and dry shitshow this thing is if storyboards by someone on youtube without any audio can convey a million times more emotion and have a stronger resonance than something made by an entire team of tumblrites with money thrown their way. JFC Raye, if this is your vanity project/ baby, then fucking prove it by putting in some god damned effort into making the rest of us emotionally connected to the world outside of gawking and pointing and laughing at this citywide car pile-up.

"Normal" trans people don't exist. They're all mentally ill.
Well they're normal for a given value of normal with the mentally ill as in "realizing that grooming a vulnerable teenager into thinking they have gender dysphoria is a really fucked up thing that grossly misrepresents their mental illness."

It says a lot about the show that the most likeable characters to people were meant to be seen as assholes for the most part.
That's one of the hallmarks of shows with bad writing though. There are way too many writers who for whatever reason end up writing their heroes as super boring and so the villains are the only characters that come across as having any sort of real personality. Maybe I'm just noticing it more nowadays but it seems to happen every time with western cartoons nowadays.

After the release of Arcane, I've been thinking about this a whole lot more. And holy shit, Chrunchyroll needs to be embarrassed constantly for this. How has fucking Netflix surpassed them in anime originals? Honestly. I don't think anyone would care if they got something similar to Arcane, but Jesus Christ. I realize Arcane took like 5 years to make and is probably, currently, the pinnacle of Western Animation currently but that's no excuse as to why Crunchyroll couldn't do something different.

The worst part about this (to Crunchyroll, it's beneficial to everyone else) is that this show pretty much destroyed the narrative that Crunchyroll are helping out the anime industry yet put their money into this show.

What exactly is Snapdragon's appeal?
So I’ve watched a few videos(most of the ones posted here), and I can answer this question.

Snapdragon is seen as the better character and the one with the most potential because he’s the only one in the show with an actual character arc and progression. Essentially he’s the only character you can legitimately latch onto.

Watching the Snapdragon meltdown and the professor telling him that he should transition feels like we have regressed in so many levels: instead of reassuring him that his body is okay the way it is, that his hands are ok, and that there is nothing wrong with him being a kind soul, and that that has nothing to do with apperances, the profesor tells him, basically, that he is right with feeling bad with his body and he should go to extreme meassures to change his apperances to conform to gender roles. Its fucking sad to see a teenager crying because he feels the size of his hands make him monstrous and an adult he trusts telling him: you are right, gotta use magic to correct that.

Trannies are all hardline traditionalists when it comes to gender roles, they'd make a stereotypical chauvinist blush. "You are a guy but you have a kind soul and find beauty in things? Chop off your dick and become a lady then you fucking pansy."

Which is ironic, considering these are the same people who complain about sexism and boobs in anime, yet also chant "SEX WORK IS REAL WORK".

Another critique video showed up and it might be the best one yet.

Literature Devil not only roasts it (that's a given for any video talking about hgs at this point), but rewrites the first episode into something engaging. And while giving writing tips so we don't repeat this amateur hour again.

Side note: I'm glad he mentions Sage's lesbo cousin in biker getup looks more like a self-insert than the tranny professor does. A pixie haircut and warrior's tunic would have been better to contrast her elf wife's long hair and dress.

I've actually posted in this thread before, but, for the life of me, I can't remember the login credentials for that account. I could only remember the email for this unused account that I don't even remember making. But whatever!

Writer Kate Leth has been getting harassed by people mad about High Guardian Spice and one of the main things they've chosen to try to hurt her with is her doomed affair with a married man who died of cancer.

Now, a normal person would ignore the trolls and talk to a friend or therapist about their problems. Kate Leth, however, is a borderline personality disorder nightmare person, so she's incapable of dealing with anything without making a big public scene to cause drama and get attention from her thousands of followers. So, she's made a yet another webcomic about her affair with a married man with terminal cancer!

Wow, there's a lot to unpack here.
  • Panel 1: In case you can't read it, the word covered up by BLOCK is "homewrecking"
  • Panel 2: LOL Kate says he "disappeared" like he stepped out for a pack of cigarettes and didn't come back or something. He didn't disappear. He Fucking DIED!
  • Panel 3: 23-year-old women are stupid babies who don't know anything, therefor all the blame should fall on the older man.
  • Panel 4: What exactly did this "hurt" entail? Is the broken glass and blood just symbolism for her emotional pain? Did he throw her through a window? She has a self-harming issue, did she cut herself over him? Is it just shocking imagery because she wants attention?
And, keep in mind, for about an entire fucking year she incessantly posted about her "older boyfriend" and how cool and awesome he was, before drunkenly confessing he was a married man. I guess he was actually awful now, though.

Oh, and she's getting her tits lopped off soon.

Well god damn, if i had my tumblr misandrist bingo card with me, i'd have won. I mean she's got the danger hair down, the ugly ass glasses, no sense of style, hates men because of a sour relationship, and now is gonna troon out!

Kinda a random question but dose anyone know anything about the animated series Raye is supposedly producing for legendary TV, because the only evidence I can find of it even existing is on her website and social media with radio static on legendary's end

Everyone complaining about how badly handled Snapdragon's insecurities were ignores that his VA said they built the character off of him. Snapdragon didn't get bullied for not being masculine and then the writers determine the best solution to this arc is to become a woman. What happened is that they diversity hired and then worked backwards with a character they already had to force it to be a self insert, ignoring the implications because no one who makes self inserts thinks about what they're doing beyond 'IT ME!'

Also the #killallmen chick has changed her tune from thinking her 'older man' romance was awesome, and having zero regrets even long after he died, to pretending he used her and abused her (by dying??) once people outed her for a homewrecking whore. It's not surprising, but it is a bit sad to see she's such a sociopath that someone she claimed to be in love with can suddenly be her victimizer that she smears through the mud post-mortem if it means deflecting criticism. The actual victims are his wife and kids, but I bet you won't see them loudly angsting on social media about it despite it being justified, because we can presume they had actual real feelings for him and are not themselves sociopaths.

Took me forever to reply to this thread, but holy shit, TWELVE episodes of this flaming garbage heap? I couldn't even get past the first episode.

Really glad I cancelled my Crunchyroll membership after the teaser of this broke out and stuck to 9Anime instead.

TBH, the show was doomed from the start. For simply having far-left Tumblr misandrists directing and developing the show, it already alienates 80% of the potential audience it's going to get. Then add another 10% because weebs like me will say that it's actually not anime since it was primarily made and developed in America and we all fucking hate Crunchyroll for not even at least trying to invest in something that is a new anime like what they did with Adult Swim and instead went with something that was better for kids on the mainstream Cartoon Network (which is now a shell of what it used to be 15 years ago).

Other in-depth factors/critiques I have to make:
- POLITICS: When this show literally waved its far-left libtard faggot agenda in front of us, it was already a dead man walking. It's generally a terrible idea when cartoons/animes/shows whatever prioritize their politics in their trailers/advertisements because that already alone means that the whole show will go that route instead of going for actual plot and quality. Also when we usually watch shows, we just want to sit back and relax. Not watch overly charged "progressive" and "woke" shows like yours truly and those on CNN and ESPN (which is also a shell of what it used to be).
- ANIMATION: Holy shit, look at those framerates baby. And those images edited in. And no sense of constant height or proportions whatsoever. Goddamn, that's 10/10 editing right there / sarcasm
- AGE-RANGE: High Guardian Spice is completely and utterly confused about the demographic it's targeting. It pushes progressive beliefs in a simplistic and direct way like something you'd expect out of Steven Universe (which I dislike) along with an animation that is considered kid-friendly (Cal-Arts which I detest), yet it uses realistic blood whenever either the heroes are injured or monsters are killed. It literally goes from a cutesy little show one moment to DEATH AND MOTHERFUCKING GENOCIDE the next without adding anything of relevance to the plot. Also, the sexual lesbian tension and undertones (if there are even any) at times are way too much for something that should be in its actual age range. Either pick an age-range to target or else you're going to alienate pretty much everyone. That being said....
- THE WRITING: I could go on and on about how laughably bad the lines and how they're delivered are (not to mention the total lack of character development and the countless self-inserts by the writers, the creator especially) as well as how poorly written the protagonists are (to the point that even the assholes and bitches in the show are more interesting than the primary focus), but to keep it as short and concise as possible, don't let us know over and over again that you're a tranny or LGBTQIAASDFGHJKL or whatever. Stop throwing the gay card without showing some fucking maturity whatsoever. We get the message that this is a "progressive" and "woke" show about lesbians, bisexuals, trannies and whatnot, now do us all a favor and shut up. Also, when the premise is literally narrated at the start, that is not a good sign at all for any show.

You want to know how to do a LGBT or yuri show correctly with actual adventure, animation quality, qualification as an anime, plot, maturity, and character development? Try something like Madoka Magica. Shit is literally a genuine solid 10/10, go watch it and the Rebellion movie already if you haven't. Just don't lose your head while watching it.

Anyways, TL;DR too many factors to name but this show was dead on arrival. Fuck you Crunchyroll for actually approving this shit, I took my viewership elsewhere by sticking to piracy. Also, watch Madoka Magica this instant.
