Middle class I think is a combination of some form of guilt towards those less fortunate than them, some form of resentment towards the upper classes, and the ideology infiltrating institutions like schools, media and universities, where they have it hammered into them.

I think they convince themselves that because they are not the 1%, multi billionaires, that they are with the working class and oppressed with them. That is until they actually have to interact with the working class, whereupon their reaction is much like one would have towards a leper.

Upper class who engage in it use it for signaling, some other usage (politics, getting people to buy shit, controlling the masses etc) or some form of guilt due to being in the upper class, without wanting to do anything to step outside it, fuelled by again, the subversion in institutions. Public Roads - the government takes money from citizens and then, that money gets redistributed in the form of roads which everyone can use for free whenever they want.
Imagine if every single road was private... it would be a nightmare.
You would have to pay every single time you used a road and also, not all roads would belong to the same company so, for example, if you want to do a left turn, you have to pay.
Only corporations and 1%-ers would be able to afford using roads.
We absolutely need public roads and they're very socialist.

Same with the police, same with firefighters.
You wouldn't have them if your country was 100% capitalist.

There's always a middle ground.

I don't know in what kind of flavour of socialism you've been experiencing or understand in socialist state, state owns everything, including road maintenance, work force, allocation of resources and resources.
