This sounds like another entry to go into "Where the Sidewalk Ends." It is incredible how difficult it is to stay alive in an era long gone, where shitposting and freedom of speech were prevalent forces on the Internet. There will always be speech I'm uncomfortable with repeating on this forum, but freedom of speech is a fundamental right. I hate that people on the supposed same side of the political spectrum as me are weaponizing against that right. Freedom of speech is important in exchanging ideas and growing outside of your shell, but so many people take opposing opinions as an attack on their character.
As a user that does not have the experience or skill set to help Null, it is disheartening to have limited options to support the forum. In my dream world, the software meant to keep everything running would be open source so that people who also share this view can help shoulder the burden rather than leaving it for a handful of people. I can't imagine the difficulty of being the face of legal threats (most frivolous), criticism for the fact that you host a free speech forum, and deal with managing the back end.
The loss of XenForo's license does not sound like a defeat, but rather something Null was working on anyway since he's already had to modify the framework so much. However, it's another sidestep in the road with many potholes and paths that have barely been traveled.
