It's the same strategy as late night talk show/news show "comedians." When you criticize them for being biased or just straight up wrong on the news they can go "well what do you expect? He's an entertainer! He has to make his show entertaining!" and then when the shit just isn't funny or entertaining the response can be "Well what do you expect? This is a news program! It's not always going to be funny or entertaining!" It's a weird variation on motte and bailey or something.
