Remember when Rooster Teeth partnered with Yogscast and then only did two episodes of TTT with them? They've raised a million euros in their own charity event in 24 hours, an event that lasts the whole month of December.

If you think it's an AH problem that they milk the same game and keep introducing new people everyone hates it's because it is. Yogscast posts 2-3 TTT videos with an occasional GTA a week and has new members every couple months (Usually women) and they're crushing AH in views.

Their TTT videos are mostly self-contained, heavily RP/improv based and feature new people most episodes, sometimes with 2 women and aren't nearly as painful to watch as AH's are. Could be because they're edited down to 15-20 minute episodes and their new employees aren't nearly as grating. In fact one of their newest, Boba recently discovered a massive time-saving skip in Metal Gear Solid speedrunning completely by accident and became a hero to the community for a week in a pretty wholesome moment

I think Gavin might have been one of the only people from the early days of RT to use the skills he had prior to RT while he was there, as he was a slow mo camera guy prior (he has credits on Top Gear and Hot Fuzz) while everyone else (like his "friend" Michael) has since just let theirs rot.
Gavin really is the only one who can have a thriving business when RT inevitably closes it's doors. He's made a name for himself as a great Phantom camera operator, he can easily shoot stock footage and sell it, work as a freelancer for big brands and even on Hollywood productions since his skills are something that not everyone has. He has a massive portfolio of work, that plus him already being kinda famous, would give him a HUGE leg up on the competition. Finding work would be easy as piss for him.

Everyone else who is currently at AH will 100% go the Twitch route, average 500 viewers/stream and call it a "success".

Another thing to note about gavin is that he has a very magnetic personality in a way that no one else at RT really has.

Gavin's venture into slow-motion was intentional, he found something really niche that would make him a "skilled worker" that qualified him to stay in America for long periods of time and Slow-Mo Guys themselves blew up to be one of the biggest YT channels for a while, he's got name recognition outside of Rooster Teeth and probably at this point more popular than Rooster Teeth itself so yeah, he'll be fine. If he ever ends up leaving RT I wouldn't be surprised if he moves back to England

Jeremy and Ray have been getting along really well on Twitch and call themselves "The Deserters" now. Jeremy has the kind of personality to pull of streaming, most of AH really need that ensemble cast to play off because they're pretty boring on their own.

Gavin is already doing stand alone ads for google. I don't really think its long before he just walks away at this point.

Also he's one of the few people left who doesn't give a fuck.
He can be a prick, but he's still someone who by the end of the day manages to get his shit done, and doesn't have to pander to the lowest common denominator to make ends meet or seem likeable. Plus, unlike the rest of RT, he's free to go about where he pleases, so if the US finally shits itself he can leave for less shitty pastures and apply his slow-mo filming skills and knowledge of the hard/software to a lot of things beyond filming.

Meanwhile, it feels like a majority of RoosterTeeth are like Ethan Ralph, someone who, regardless of what they do, cannot take the L, but in RoosteTeeth's case, it feels like they're doing whatever it takes to not get canceled. They can see it over the horizon, and they're desperately trying to outrun it. They're throwing as much minority hires and tight lips at it to keep it away, and I cannot wait until it all falls apart.

Apparently the Tweet Hideo sent to Rahul was so vague that it spawned an article from Kotaku. How fucking bored do you gotta be to make an article out of that.
I mean, you said it all when you said the word "Kotaku".
Fuck those guys and the nag that they rode in on.

Any idea if he's going this stuff as a freelancer or as an employee of RT?

If he's freelancing, then sure he's good. If he's doing this as an RT employee, then he's likely just getting brand recognition and a standard paycheck, while good, not as good for branching out on his own.

I doubt it. RT or any of its branding didn't appear a single time. Gavin is also much more independent from RT than most people realize as slow mo guys is not under RT and Gavin has done freelance stuff away from RT in the past.

100% of Gavin's slow motion stuff has been free lance. There isn't a single part of it that RT benefits from it outside of him probably shooting their stuff in slow motion for free.

Gavin's nice expensive house and life style is paid from his phantom camera and expertise, not from RT.

Yogscast did the truly wild thing of not demonizing and antagonizing your audience. This results in people who no longer watch them regularly still show up for the tradition of their charity live streams.

Pretty off topic but since Yogscast is being mentioned, Sjin started uploading videos to Youtube again after 2 years of silence. Seems he's gone the route of just completely ignoring what happened.

so i'm not a very educated man, does anyone want to explain why Gavin is important?

like this is going to sound like an autistic question, but i'm not autistic, i'm just stupid.

all I've ever heard of Gavin isn't that he's got some innate skill with cinematography or anything like that, all I ever hear is "but he knows how to use a phantom camera, so."

what the fuck is a phantom camera and how is it so complex to use that the fact Gavin can use one makes him valuable?

like again, stupid question, i know. I just never understood how anytime anyone talks about Gavin it isn't "the man has a genius eye for filming" it's always "the man knows how to use a fancy camera".

The phantom camera is an incredibly expensive (100k+) piece of tech for slow motion filming. There are very few of them in existence and even fewer people who can properly use them.

He is not a genius, but Gavin has an incredibly rare and therefore valuable tool and the skill to use it. He has worked on major motion films explicitly for his camera and his ability to use it.

oh i know what he's worked on and i know he's qualified, i just don't understand the how or why.

how did he get such an expensive tool and how did he learn to use it if it's so impossibly complex?

i know i sound like an idiot but it's not like Gavin created the camera, the tool is not unique to him, so why is the fact he's able to use it so valuable, couldn't anyone theoretically learn to use it? i guess it's the fact everyone keeps saying "gavin knows how to do x" as opposed to "Gavin has natural skill at doing x" that's fucking me up.

makes it sound like gavin' found this phantom camera in the fuckin' caves of Agrabah or some shit.

It's probably just a niche set of skills. I imagine it's not that nobody could learn it, but that nobody getting into the industry really does. And those that are just starting out probably can't afford the camera (IIRC the company Gavin worked for let him use their cameras when he was starting out).
