For most of the 20th century (and still today in some countries) homophobia, and homosexuality, mostly meant gay men. Lesbians got shit too of course (corrective rapes and other horrible things), but when you're talking about gays being banned from jobs, from teaching, people being kicked out of their homes, anti “sodomy” laws, assaults, murders, chemical castration and torturous conversion therapy, you're talking about gay men. Gay men were the freaks, were the ones being equated with pedophiles, were the ones pushing a sinister "agenda" and were "recruiting" your kids.
Except...Lesbian were the victims of conversion therapy in Western nations too. Held against their will in mental facilities. Treated with electroshock therapy. Imprisoned, tortured and raped by cops for the crime of being visibly queer, just a couple decades ago.
And in any countries were gay men are persecuted you don't ear as much about gay women for a simple reasons: because it's already so fucking horrible to be born a woman there, there's not much worse shit that can be inflicted on them for being gay on top of being a woman. And what happens to them happens behind closed doors anyway: harder to keep track of and bring awareness to. Since they are already so often banned from meaningfully participating in public life, deprived of education, married as minors or just used as sex slaves, not allowed to work outside the home, doing all the fucking chores from morning to night, raped, sexually mutilated, victims of honor killing ... just for being women.
Any religion, governement, belief system or tribal shit that persecutes gay men's sexuality is also persecuting any woman's sexuality, not even just the ones considered "deviants". Gay men, as men, have just enough liberties to discover their sexualities and be punished for it, but such wiggle room doesn't seem to even exist for queer women.
Western Gay Men: stop making everything about you and pick up a book or two.
Homophobia doesn't only target gay men. You just are not paying attention to gay women history so you don't notice what else is happening that isn't happening to you.
I think part of it is because gay men are so much more ‘visible’ than lesbians are. Lipstick lesbians aside, just look at Janis Ian from Mean Girls (2004) as an example. Even though she almost certainly WAS a lesbian, it was always left for interpretation and the movie just merely addressed her as a tomboy/outsider.
The joke about Janis is that she is
lebanese, not lesbian, and that Regina misheard, you doofus. Besides teen comedies are the last place to learn about real-world stuff.
ANYWAY
As for what peaked me, i think i tried to learn about and do right by what was presented as a persecuted minority with constitutional rights and got tranny fatigue too, from reading their own writing and listening to their owns words (and not just middle-age reddit agps living in trailers). I was looking for answers about thorny, interesting problems and i found a bottomless pit of self-loathing and deny, papered with logical fallacies.
All the whining, the rage against biological destiny and the straight-up lying. The fact that asking questions about the obvious differences between males and females is considered suspect to them, pushed me to find places when i could ear a more nuanced point of view and just shoot the shit.
And that without mentioning the people i knew who transitioned...
I don't hate them, i am just sceptical of them. I talk shit here to keep myself sane but not elsewhere.
I don't want them to be kicked out by their families or prevented from transitioning. I am just waiting for the news cycle to come back to reality and acknowledge that males don't belong in women sports and women prisons. They need to acknowledge that you can be whatever in most contexts but certainly not all contexts. You cannot be 100% the other sex, you can only be something in-between, an approximation, and that's it takes time. And it's not up to society to try and bridge that gap, as it's impossible.
