I remember being the only one to vote for Bob Dole in the mock elections my grade school had. I remember it, because I got singled out for voting for him.

Band of Brothers was a well done HBO show when I remembered it growing up, so at least Edward can rest peacefully knowing that his honor was remembered in the right way.

Bob Dole on the other hand was the perfect example of patriotism embodied, even in old age. Next to being one of the first to support Donald Trump running for President, he was also famous for standing out of his wheelchair to salute to the late POTUS George H.W. Bush:

Even for a war veteran, there’s a strong chance that we will never have anyone come close to what a Bob Dole represents. Instead, we’ll just be replaced with war veterans who want to be pro-war and involve themselves in more foreign war meddling while involving America into something that has nothing to do with us.

Either way, bless these two soldiers that at least almost managed to reach the age of 100. While completely different as far as professions go, they still represent a time when being a proud American was worth cheering for.

Apart from maybe some who were teenage conscripts or partisans in the final war months, everyone who saw active combat duty in WW2 is over 90 if they're still alive.

I met Mr. Dole in college, he had been friends with one of my professors who himself was a retired member of the State Dept. He got him to come to our university the year after he lost the election and sit down with about 80 or so students in the library and just take questions and tell stories for three hours. He smiled the whole time, all of us that were involved in the military, be it ROTC, Reserves, GI Bill or already contracted or had completed OCS, he took the time to tell us the sacrifice and professionalism that we had to hold ourselves to not just as members of the services, but as citizens to make sure we left the military better than we found it. After it was over my professor invited a handful of us to go get dinner and drinks with him and Mr. Dole. We ended up closing down the place, stayed there from about 6pm to 2am eating, drinking, listening to stories and telling our own. Mr. Dole even handled the bill at the end of the night for a dozen college seniors who were handling more than a few pitchers and pizzas. He killed everytime he made a joke, he even was randomly replacing the item he held in his paralyzed hand with silly shit like an unlit candle, breadsticks, upside down empty beers, some dude's sunglasses that he stole. Just a supremely great dude
