America doesn't have a gun culture so much as we have a violence culture. We could get really violent with or without guns, and that's in peacetime and just for fun. With all the wars we've had, including the World Wars, the one with the most casualties was where we decided to just start killing each other.Australian here, and you're mostly right, Australia never had the kind of gun culture America had. What we did have was a huge population of hunters and farmers with rifles, and that still exists to some degree. Also, what people always ignore is Australia always had an extremely low rate of gun violence, even decades before Port Arthur. In fact, I believe the rate has actually increased slightly since then.
If you took away our guns we'd just start killing each other with other shit.
It's a problem with our culture and pretending some dumb bullshit like "gun control" will somehow fix it is laughable utopian bullshit. Whoever thinks that bullshit would work has no idea of how many levels of murder every American is living on, from the weakest soyboy to the biggest most bulked-up Rambo.
