What kills me is when these people ask for $5,000+ in a month or less, which is above the average income of workers in most states (even more when you account for taxes). That’s not trying to survive until you can get on your feet, that’s running a business. How many of these E-beggars get a job after the generous donations they receive, scourge up a little apartment/budget they can live off, and pay back to others in need as part of their supposed mutual aid ideals?
There are people who are down on their luck, and there are people in situations where they’ll looking at lifelong injury or even death because they can’t afford/can’t get what would otherwise be simple heathcare treatment. Every dollar that goes to grifters and randos on Twitter who have a 50% chance of spending it on booze or airBnB is money that could’ve gone to them.
A lot of the grifting behaviors of these people can be explained by putting yourself in the mindset of a professional beggar. They need to be somewhere with a large, active user base (Twitter), which has a population with high chance of being sympathetic to them (also Twitter). Many of their “targets”/potential donors are bleeding heart Idpol leftists, so being black/gay/trans/zoophile/autistic is a huge bonus. If you’re white and mentally healthy your prospects are greatly reduced, so it’s better to find something to self diagnose, or look into a different hustle. Therefore non-minority e-beggars are far less common in proportion to their greater share of the population.
I also wonder how many of these accounts are legitimate. It’s obvious there’s money to be made, and it isn’t hard to set up a fake persona of a polyqueer trans black bipolar beauty queen being forced to eat rats to survive in LA who needs money for her beautiful children. If they haven’t already, professional scammers are going to take advantage of twitters generosity and lack of due diligence.
