Ao oni is a well known classic RPG Maker Horror Game. The premise is simple. You are stuck in a location, you find keys, solve puzzles, get chased by a giant purple naked man. So just your typical experience in America. First version of the game came out in 2008. There 6 versions according to the wiki, 4 of which I am going to play. The 6 versions are 1.1, 3.0, 4.2 5.2, 6.03 and 6.23. I am skipping 4.2 and 6.03 as apparently they more just demos for the versions after them then full versions, but hey the wiki has a page on them, so I might as well make a note of them.

The game also has 2 Mobile sequels.

I am willing to say it Ao oni did FNAF before FNAF when it comes to the stupid amount of fangames it has. Just doing a quick google search, and You can find lists naming a good hundred or so fangames. No saying how many there are lost to time now, how many are dead downloads and such, real shame isn't it.

Also IT HAS 2 FUCKING MOVIES. Yes not one, but two movies.

Played this myself. Liked it a lot, and it was genuinely anxiety inducing at times and its horror is a great mix between supernatural and pseudo zombie like. Looking forward to more posts on this.

EDIT: Now that I was reminded of this thing, I need to download the latest ver. and give it a go. See if it's still as spooky as when I was a teen.

I played one of the early versions of this a long, long time ago and was intensely weirded out by the game. Also got really bored extremely fast. I totally forgot it even existed until Internet Historian did a video on it and wow. Glad I never continued on the older versions because the gameplay is pretty dire.

Maybe I'm desensitized but the monster in this game just looks too goofy and cartoonish for me to find it scary. And that stock "spooky strings" riff that plays on repeat every time it appears doesn't help either. It still deserves the credit for being one of the first spooky RPG maker games though.

There also apparently a anime, but it's really just short 3 minutes episodes of comedy stuff, according to someone on youtube. I like trash but I am not going to look too much into what ever the fuck the trash anime version is.

Anyway with that horrifying revelation out of the way.

Maybe it's because it a translation thing, but did we really need a full textbox just for it to say "Very Recently. " ?

Can we appreciate how Kazuya head is facing towards Hiroshi, and not looking where he walking.

I assume they talking about pokemon, as this was the year that version come out.

I am not going into this blind, I replayed this version before starting this LP, and I am starting to wonder.
Was this first version made as a Real life fan fiction? You know how kids in school would write fan fictions about how they kill the bully, or that they are super awesome with super powers.

It would explain why the story is so bare bones, and why only the bullies die. spoiler but let's be honest here not really much of one given the kind of game we are working with.

I should mention like 2 people have speedrun this version of the game. Record of 12:36, with 3 minutes of that just being this opening cut scene.

You could be drunk, and black out for this whole opening, and nothing would really be lost story wise.

That was goosebumps level of scary. Not the good goosebumps episode, but the ones that fall flat like a wet fart.

These two do have names, but they are pretty much so forgettable characters, so I wont even say them.

Thankfully this game is good about locked doors. You find a key, not only does the key tell you what floor it goes to, but it auto unlock it when you walk into the door.

Second time I've heard someone say Ao Oni looks like YandereDev. I can see why if people didn't know this game came first.

But I think that more of a insult to the Ao Oni, more then to YandereDev. Whats the worse Ao Oni ever does? Chase and kill kids that trespass into his house? YandereDev is far far worse then our Boy in blue(purple).

Someone threw a meltdown because I told them their game wasn't very good (I opened it up in RPGmaker and the person doesn't know how to use switches) and tried to get me banned. Hilariously, the mod sided against her because they saw evidence of her chimping out.

As a side note, I wanted to make a Chris themed Ao Oni but I kept putting it off.

It's not so much their appearance, but the fact that they chase you while that violin sting plays. They could've looked like anything and it would've been anxiety-inducing.

I am a huge sperg for these top-down Indie horror games and for the most part, the visuals are not the scariest element. That's what makes them unique. Someday, I'd like to acquire the talent to make one myself.
