The big piece of curiosity to me is that the only real candidate in 2024 is going to be Trump. I don't mean that as in the Democrats won't run anybody, I mean that as in they'll be judged simply by how not-Trump they are. My old professor was born in (and needed to flee from persecution in) the Soviet Union, and he would tell us about how the Soviet Union couldn't define itself by itself. It would rather define itself by being anti-Western, this revealing the weakness of their ideology and identity. If you can't define yourself and what you want save for opposition to some grand opponent, then you're reliant upon their continued existence (in some form or another) to determine who you are. If Trump's ultimately the one who defines the future and whatever form the Democrats will take, what power do they have by themselves? What a terrible existential quandary!
