Yea, as much as I agree with the posters who said that going to church, exploring healthier coping mechanisms and communities, and having a better relationship with his mother to boot, are all "better" and preferable options to his current situation, I am once again reminded that in the end it would change nothing. Chibi is still Chibi, and thus will inevitably Chibi it up, likely making his mother an outcast in her congregation to boot. That's assuming he even puts in the effort to give things an earnest try and not just use it for more whinefuel in his depleting hug boxes.

Religion is a stupid coping mechanism but it's a much more reasonable one than airing out every detail of your life online and repeatedly calling your own mother a bitch and threatening to end your relationship with her if she doesn't cough up cash you don't need

It's not stupid it's actually good and has been a facet of our society since the beginning of humanity for a reason. Sure it didn't always work, but it worked for Chibi's mom, and when someone is religious and believes it's a positive force in their life, when they offer it to you they're not trying to brainwash you. It isn't some insidious scheme to trick you into joining their team. They genuinely believe they're trying to help you.

I think this is how Chibi sees all interactions and why he can't find lasting relationships. If you offer him pity or kind words, he thinks it means he's IN. However if you don't have something he wants, you don't exist and he would trip over your corpse with an annoyed expression.

Without religion we wouldn't even be here. It gave early man a reason to help others and not be a complete asshole to everybody else. It gave people pause to consider their actions. Soon enough these actions were more or less ingrained and is what led to societies. Sure it can also cause a lot of harm in terms of religious wars, jihads and the like but overall it's possibly done more good than harm. The problem comes when you have grifters, con men and those who seek to enslave or have others follow them religion is possibly the easiest way to do this.

But it's not evil. It's what people do in it's name that is evil.
