Anyway from looking into it and Japanese media reporting on it, it seems it was not actual *porn* but german magazines from the 80s for the nudist life style that also have children it in. like they are just hobbist nudist magazines.
One hand him wanting to use them as reference material makes sense, but on the other hand DUDE WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING, DON'T FUCKING BUY THAT SHIT.
The mangaka himself seems to actually be into fat older woman with saggy tits though.

I'm pretty fucking sad about this overall since Galko-chan was an enjoyable anime and manga and its such a fucking let down.

I'm assuming the thing is that it's "safer" to look for that sort of "reference material" in old print than it is to look for it online. It would be way safer to just get some barbie-doll style "safe" 3D models and pose them yourself, though. I think a lot of software for artists these days come out of the box with models you can pose and shit.

And yeah, did not expect the guy drawing so many huge-titted girls to be into that stuff. Live and learn, I guess.

The issue is that you can still buy these magazines, they are up for sale on Etsy and even Amazon and people collect them. I know the artist did like to collect fashion magazines and stuff to use as reference material because he drew a lot of different costumes ranging fro modern stuff to Victorian and everything inbetween.

It doesn't help that Japan's laws on it have changed a few years ago and I think enforcement is still a fluid thing. There are no two ways about it, Japan does have an unrecognized issue with actual real-life child sexual abuse, and it's only recently that they've started cracking down on it. And with Japanese law enforcement being as overzealous as they are whenever they're demanded results, I expect them to nab at a least a few more manga artists along the way. Either legit, or as collateral damage to pad their numbers and show "results".

The lesson to be learned here? Buy posable dolls, I guess.

Yeahhhh… I can't read the article it links to, but based on it, are you really so confident in the "dude, it was just reference material" argument? I'm inclined not to buy it. If you really must use photographic reference material, why does it have to be nude? And we're talking manga here anyway so it doesn't have to be truly anatomically correct.

nude posing is kind of the end-all-be-all for art, and perhaps he was just using it for studies or non-manga work. you're also like, required to study proper anatomy before delving into manga style, but he's a veteran at this point so i really dunno.

it makes a lot more sense to call it photographic reference if the nude models in the mag were mostly adult but happened to have children. ain't saying that it's right, but there's some nuance to be had here.

A third party selling that sort of stuff on market sites doesn't necessarily mean it's legal to sell or own; most likely Etsy hasn't noticed someone's selling it on their site and taken it down yet. And you can't tell me the original purpose of those magazines was not to be used as pornography.

Well, that was a weird wiki crawl to go in. As it turns out, the "FKK" on that listing title there stands for Freikörperkultur, a nudist movement still pretty popular in Germany.

The world gets weirder and weirder the more I look at it. I suppose for a Japanese person these days that sort of shit would be peak exoticism. And while I'm all for artistic expression, if you're collecting content like that in Current Year, you're either a pedo or a complete moron. The question that we'll likely never see answered because these headlines never get a proper follow-up is which category does Kenya Suzuki fall into.

With how many manga artists are in Japan, and with how artists in general lean towards incredibly autistic, it's a statistic certainty some of them will get caught doing scummy shit. Whether Kenya Suzuki was caught with books packed cover to cover with nude kids, or whether the books had like 5 pictures of children playing on the beach among 90 pages of adults hanging out with their dongs out, we'll never know. Again, we never see proper follow-up on these things, the headline alone is enough to turn the person and their works radioactive.

Hmm. It's definitely not my thing but I can buy nudism as a "lifestyle" for hippie-dippies and/or hardcore "the industrial revolution and its consequences" types. But once you break out the cameras and start publishing photographic magazines and videos, you're not reporting on a hobby; you're making pornography. I'd say it's less "everyone who complains about lolicon has a related skeleton in their closet", and more "the more frequently someone brings up lolisho to complain about it, the more likely it is they have a related skeleton in their closet". They damn well know that the shit they're into is fucked up, so they try and cover it up by vocally and repeatedly doing the exact opposite in public in hopes that'll throw people off the scent. They think it'll stop them from being caught, but none of them can keep up the lie forever.
