It's because everyone, literally almost everyone my age (early 40s) and younger, has read Harry Potter. It was the biggest pop cultural phenomenon of the 21st century in the English speaking world as far as books and movie tie-ins go. Marvel may come close now, but Potter was highly lauded by educators around the English speaking world, perhaps the entire world, because it got children reading. No other book series has had as much success ever in getting children's attention.
These children are now grown up. The ones my age were in college when the books came out, we introduced them to our children, who are now teenagers/in college. All of us are the demographic for trooning out for various reasons, our early lives were spent being fascinated by this magical world where the good guys won and the bad guys were obvious.
Trooning out is magical thinking, whether or not you realize it is. So when the author of the magical books of our formative years, or our children's formative years, comes out and says "magic isn't real" a whole lot of mentally ill people are forced to confront the cognitive dissonance they've been avoiding for so long.
Then the REEEEEEEEEEEEING happens.
TL;DR: Most popular book series of all time attracted a shit load of mentally unstable believers in magic, who are all devastated to learn God says magic isn't real.
Sounds right. Additionally, I remember the predictions that all the kids reading Harry Potter would eventually graduate to real literature. Sadly, didn't happen. The only graduation was sideways to what came to be described as young adult novels, soaking up the 'lore' of other fandoms like Star Wars, pornographic fanfic communities, etc. They certainly read a lot, except they exclusively read garbage. This probably has something to do with both the smugness of progressives and their general lack of higher cognitive functioning - they are a horde of midwits.
