That actually was one of the reasons for the purges. Stalin wanted new blood, people "from the soil", who'd bring a fresher, more modern face to the regime, but also be deeply indebted to him since they were all rapidly promoted under him. Another important aspect is how these new people would all be complicit in the destruction of the old people, who's deaths they benefited from, and they'd all understand that they themselves were replacable.

Of course Lindsay's behaviour is aggravating. But if we look it from a bird's eye view across all cultures and history, it's relatively normal, organic human behaviour. The point is that normal human behaviour outside rarefied highly structured institutional environments (such as work, school, and church) is not virtuous. People often behave like Lindsay; in hypocritical, puritanical, and vindictive ways. And those words I just used, such as 'virtue', give clues to this. They are multisyllabic. They are Latin-derived, meaning they are closer to monasteries and nunneries than they are to woad, pigsties and longhuts.

I think what we're dealing with with cancel culture, and ALSO the reaction against cancel culture, is people struggling to come to terms what people are really like when the social scripts and time and space limits of centralised, globalised society are removed.

Before the internet, if you got together with strangers, there had to be agenda or a ritual form to the interaction: you were at the pub or a dance, at church, at the worksite.. but with the internet it's a complete structureless free-for-all.
