It’s because they really were that stupid. This was an era where beautiful hardwood furniture was tossed in the landfill in order to Rent-to-Own cheap particle board crap.
These were the generations that molested great Victorian and Queen Anne architecture by covering it with aluminum and vinyl siding. Because they were too lazy to keep their houses painted.
They ripped out the interiors and clad everything with fake wood paneling and shag carpet and acoustic ceiling tiles.
They opted for cheap and disposable crap that would, ironically, have to be replaced every five or ten years.
So rather than having a hardwood floor that would last a century with minimum upkeep, they covered everything with linoleum that would have to be replaced every ten. And by “replaced” I mean just covered up with a second and a third and a fourth layer because they were just that lazy.

They also put a layer of asbestos on the backside of linoleum, vinyl and pvc flooring for a long time.
In fact, those assholes put asbestos in EVERYTHING. Insulation, Drywalls, Taping Compound, Ceiling Tiles, Roofing, Tile Adhesive and countless more shit.

Makes working on houses built OR renovated at any point before the asbestos ban around 1990 dangerous and/or expensive.

Asbesdos is fucking every where in old stuff, I had a old "Deed Box" from about 1920 that had it mixed in with the Fire Box clay they used as the filler and it still had some asbestos fabric document covers in it, a lot of old Ovens have it too.

My neighbor has asbestos in his siding to the point where it would cost more than the house is probably worth to remove and replace it.
