We are not even a full week into 2022 and there are currently large protests all over Kazakhstan which is definitely something to keep an eye on. Based on what everyone is saying, The protests stemmed from the rise in fuel prices and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency.

The CIS -stans have been barely holding themselves together since the breakup of the USSR, and have mostly just been pulling through on the backs of cult-of-personality autocrats. Covid and the fall of Afghanistan have been putting a lot of pressure on them lately but even before the pandemic Kazakhstan wasn't doing too hot. Nazarbayev had to resign in 2019 after almost a year of low-level protests which kept going through 2020. So this isn't really all that new, although the scale of these seems larger. Tokayev has never had the kind of grip on the country that Nazarbayev had, so we'll see what happens.

The "appearance" of pro-Russian militants in sand camo probably, if Ukraine is any indication.

So when do death and famine show up?
Hm. I am not sure on that. Kazakhstan was one of the CIS states not too thrilled on independence anyways, so I don't think Russia would need force to re-integrate them like Ukraine. I wonder if it would be either a) continue to prop up the current regime as a puppet or b) install a new puppet with more authority and pretend to cater to the demands of the people. Full integration or an attempt at it would be kind of surprusing.

But, I could be wrong, so Imma wait for Putin to make a move before speculating seriously.

I don't think Russia is interested in getting involved too heavily. They're already busy dealing with Ukraine, intervening in Kazakhstan could stretch them too thin and make their Ukraine gambit less convincing to the West. Also, China would not appreciate a Russian client state on their weak western flank. They'll probably just do the bare minimum to get things reasonably stable again and keep the oil and gas flowing.

Lol, on that same token, I would say that Russia needs to exert some influence niw to keep the Chinese at ar.'s length. Might not be long until the dragon looks at Eastern Siberia hungrily if the Arctic opens up as a new maritime trade route.

But I do agree, the Russians do need to be cautious hoe much shit they pile onto their plate, especially with being ostracised from any Western cooperation on other issues like China because of Ukraine.

Not gonna lie it would be hilarious if the second and third biggest threats to American Sovereignty in the world were to end up going at each other because Xi is a Lolcow.

To be fiar, it's kind of hilarious how issues in Afghanistan, in which the Great Game was played many years ago, which the USSR invaded, and which the USA invaded still continue to cause Russian headaches in Central Asia. That little lolcow of a country can't help but be a pain in literally everyone's ass and it will be funny if they manage to piss off the Chinese, too.

What's Xi gonna do? Invade them?

That would be great, not gonna lie.

Remember when Metokur said 2020 was the pestilence horseman? Could this year be war's turn?
Jim just can't let go of corona-chan, can he? More people have died doing stupid things under the assumption that faucci's pet project was bubonic's second coming than there have been actual corona victims.

More to the point, what are the odds that this unrest is one big glownigger op?
