I didn't make this very clear; he absolutely spent a MINIMUM of 300 dollars to buy an Oculus Quest 2 headset. In addition, he then paid someone else an unspecified amount of money to make him an avatar, only to find out that the avatar wasn't uploaded in a way to make it visible to Quest users.
When it comes to VRChat and furries, what a lot of creators will do is release a finished and rigged-up model semi-publicly, as in they'll let people buy their assets via a service like GumRoad, usually with some sort of agreement that you're allowed to edit/re-texture the model as you see fit (but you won't re-sell it). In particular, there's this one specific canine model that's so incredibly prevalent for vrchat avatars:
My best guess is that Gabe paid for some sort of furry cat avatar (I've seen them in the range of $20-50 on GumRoad) and then commissioned someone to retexture it so it looks like his fursuit. Most model creators usually don't give a fuck if you do this (since you did pay for the model, after all), but knowing that Gabe has a history of being cheap as shit, it's also fully possible he convinced someone to hand over their copies of the files so he could bypass paying for the model altogether.
The Quest does have a feature that lets you hook it into a capable pc and use it as a PC VR set as well, so if he's going that route, this price isn't taking into account the price of the pc and any accessories he might have bought (you can connect it to your pc wirelessly, but ideally you'd be better off wiring it directly into your pc due to latency issues). He does mention he got the game working on PC at one point, so we'll just assume he at least has a semi-functional gaming pc.
So just as a very conservative estimate, we can break down Gabe's spending on this VR escapade:
Oculus Quest 2:
$300-$400
VRchat cat model bought off GumRoad:
$0-$50
Avatar retexture commission:
$20-$60
USB-C cable to hook the Quest 2 into his pc:
$20-$80 (Ideally you need a really long cable for this, Oculus makes an "official" cable for $80)
This gives us an
estimated range of $340-$590 on his VR setup, and that's not even taking into account whatever his pc cost. Normally I wouldn't give a fuck what most furries do in their free time or spend their money on, but a friendly reminder that Gabe is a deadbeat dad who has refused to help take care of his children and repeatedly ignored child support, and he chose to spend his money on this shit instead of supporting his children.
