I'm sure they meant it as a "dumb action movie combined dumb horror movie," but it actually makes sound like a good character drama with excellent horror and action. The truth is in the middle as Predator characters aren't exactly the most soulful.

At no point did I get the feeling that either of them really liked the film, so much as they enjoyed what it represented to each of them. I think the problem is their sarcastic jabs at the audience. To paraphrase: "Lol, you stupid fratboys demanded more bullet time so here's a bunch of shitty bullet time. Happy?" Are all Wisconsinites niggers? Nobody on earth was demanding another Matrix movie. Most people hated the sequels (though apparently there's this weird movement pretending Reloaded was actually okay).

I distinctly recall them saying the Matrix: Retarderections is a bad Matrix movie but gets their seal of approval only because it is beat-you-over-the-head expressly anti-nostalgiabait and-or is amusing on the meta level of "a studio actually signed off on a film that made fun of its audience and its producer and thought this would do well"
It may be a limp-dicked example of taking the piss out of nostalgia, sure, but what other big blockbuster in the last few years even swam remotely close to that tone? even ghostqueefers 2016 worshipped at the altar of nostalgia while it proceeded to fuck everything up that made the original good

I don't think the movie did anything different. Sure, the first half of the movie was full of obnoxious, snarky, and self-aware dialogue (which is an ever-growing trend in media today, so ... That's not new), and the second half was full of nostalgia bait (as the movie literally replays clips from the previous Matrix movies constantly) with terribly done action scenes ... Which, again, is not anything new.

The movie fails on every level for me. It fails on being a good and straightforward movie, it fails on being decent nostalgia bait, and it fails on its own forced meta commentary.

A movie like Ghostbusters: Afterlife most certainly has its problems, don't get me wrong (the third act being the most damning thing, most definitely) ... But I at least enjoyed it to some degree. I'll probably never watch it again, but at least the movie managed to tell a story that didn't contradict itself and at least the movie wasn't up its own ass.

I would get so mad at Siskel and Ebert when they would trash a movie that I liked. Sometimes I thought it was so unfair. Like Ebert would say that [X] idea was handled so much better in [some old-timey movie I've never heard of]. I mean, just judge the movie on its own merits.

It's literally a job issue.

I mean I enjoy films, but if I had to literally spend 8 hours a day watching 3 or 4 of them to write about them over and over and over...

Yeah, things are going to get stale. I'll probably fall in love with some quirky indie mind fuckery just because it's so different it's finally broken up my monotony.

Conversely the audience isn't doing this. They are working 8 hrs a day with only a few hours afterwards to spare for something. It doesn't bother them as much if MCU film #487 is a lot like MCU film #486, because they watched that months ago, have forgotten most of it, and just want to escape for a few hours. They're not seeing 20 films a week (unless they have a toddler in love with a movie, then it's literally the same film), they might see 5 at most.

That's the big divide.
