It is just shocking that people as unpleasant and mean spirited as Lindsay Ellis even got to lose their virginity to begin with. Why is it that good, well behaved people of both genders (who don't brag about being nice that is) end up virgins, yet rotten, hateful, mean spirited goblins of both genders get laid? I just don't get that.

Now I wonder if there was money or pity involved with Lindsay Ellis here. That would at least make sense.

If it had been, I'm pretty sure she would have said something about the books in her goodbye post. I think the third one got cancelled and that was what caused her to make the goodbye post, because it was final proof that yes, she was never going to escape YouTube.

I mean, maybe she could have, if she'd put more effort into her writing career. But that was never going to be an option.

The farewell note Lindsay wrote is so surreal to me. She's basically saying everything that we already knew. "Cancel culture is toxic." "They're not doing it for good, they're doing it to feel self-righteous." "They judge everyone, they forgive no one." "If you try to talk about how badly its hurting you, they'll have no empathy and use leftist talking points to dismiss you."

She acts like these things are huge, shocking revelations she just discovered. But it's the stuff that's been in public discourse for ages. It isn't even strictly a right-wing thing, everybody from morning talk radio hosts, to MSM news reporters to fucking Family Guy talked about all of this. Outside of the incredibly niche circle you were in, everybody was aware of this problem and very vocal about it.

Before it happened to her, Lindsay probably would have told you cancel culture isn't real, isn't a problem and everyone who complains it is a whiner. She would have waved it off as "facing consequences" and never thought about it again.

"Nice guys" often lack aggression. I guess aggression has a negative connotation. Assertiveness, more like. Assholes tend to have assertiveness in spades. As far as getting laid is concerned, too much is easier to deal with than too little (not to the point of assault obviously). People gotta know what you want to give it to you.

She already knew. She denied it cause these people pay her bills, and she enjoyed using them as a weapon to sic on her detractors. That's how Lindsay plays. Hell, in that same note she takes a bunch of catty shots at white men and blames capitalism. She hasn't changed at all, she's just sick of it happening to her.

This perfectly encapsulates why content creators are insufferable. He puts out at most two 20-40 minute videos a month, 2-3 podcasts of 1 hour each and a stream-of-consciousness article on Patreon. Almost every fucking time he puts a new video up, there's a comment on the Patreon email about how very tired he is from the effort, how very exhausting and soul-ripping his job is. He's sitting at a keyboard in the dark, reading a script and editing that footage. Unlike Lindsay, he doesn't even have to worry about putting on a pound of makeup and an ironic reference t-shirt before filming. He's not Hontra or Olly or even Jenny, with absurd costuming or research. His work is in the writing, speaking and editing. Hardly worth a whine for leniency on social media.

Since getting sponsorships he's even gone down to one video a month, so he must get at least $10K to balance it out vs paypig and ad money. At least he charges by the video/product rather than the month like Lindsay. Also, anyone who has followed him for any length of time knows that getting a year-end list out before March is a miracle. Fucks sake, how nice it must be to have the hardest part of your day be when fans ask when your next work will be released. And because of the fanbase overlap with Lindsay, no doubt many stans did feel guilty from this miffed bit of cringe. It's not like he has any skills to fall back on though (education in journalism, music theory and elementary teaching) so he's in the YouTube game as long as possible.

Todd has as much ingratitude towards his fans as Lindsay and it will bite him in the ass.

Per-video pay helps with support not feeling ripped off, but when you get $7600 a video it also means your output is bound to be slow/lazy. It only takes two videos of effort a month to be making serious money. If he went as far as to do a weekly video he'd be clearing the median household income every quarter.

This is how I see it as well. You have to do all of this without the resources of a publicist to steer you, or a professional editor. If you think being a YouTuber is a luxurious career, FAFO.

It is something I see with a lot of 'creators' though. They get their start making low quality grainy 360p vids on YouTube or sometimes even before that. When YouTube got really big they rode that wave too, a lot of times deservedly. Most of them are by that point tempted to try and increase production quality in some way which inevitably takes away a lot of the charm that made them popular in the first place. In their head they have to from that point on always adhere to those self-imposed quality standards.

It's no surprise that leads to mainly living off pandering to the parasocial relationships with Patreon paypigs. Throw in some complaining/whining about how much of a cut YouTube takes and how they will get demonetized because of what they talk about, content id, algorithm etcetera etcetera. It happened with Ellis, Todd and to my grief Jenny Nicholson too. I'm not ashamed to say I've enjoyed many of their vids but the pattern I describe has made me lose most interest.

It's also why I hate that stupid Nebula thing. "By creators for creators". Who cares about viewers, right?
