Spain had it worse. After the US-Spanish war where we took the remnants of their new world holdings and the Philippines, Spain had very serious shock at home coming to terms with the fact they were no longer a world power or an empire. Portugal had a bunch of trading posts around the globe and Brazil. Brazil's history is interesting because during the Napoleonic Wars, the King of Portugal was so terrified of Napoleon he made Brazil the capital of Portugal and fled. The Brazilians were like 'wtf' and voted to become a republic.
