LEGO has been a long running series of titles that have lasted since 1995, though they are more well known for the Tt games licensed action/puzzle/platformers that began in 2005 with LEGO Star Wars.

Personally, I have enjoyed these titles for years. I used to play them on Wii U during the droughts of that console, giving me a bit of a connection to them. While I have not played all, I have had exposure to quite a few notable entries.

Most of the entries I played were in the 2012-2016 era, where many were shit. If I were to say which ones are worth having, I think half the list would be gone. That said, the good ones are something special, and with LEGO Star Wars being a hopeful rebirth to the franchise, I wanted to see if others had experience with these titles.

Never played those titles, so I cannot comment.
 
Enjoyed the first LEGO Star Wars game on Gamecube back in the day. Also played and enjoyed the first 2 Batman ones- never got around to playing the third one, it's in my backlog, along with DC Supervillain and the first Marvel Superheroes game. Might pick up Dimensions if I can find the game and some sets cheap.

I think it was a missed opportunity that there was never a LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game back when LEGO had the license. That could have been a fun game.

I don't want to self-dox with my own knowledge of obscure LEGO titles, but let's just say my top 3 aren't in the OP.

The game is a mixed bag and one that really comes down to what franchises you like. Some franchises are treated super well n Dimensions, others are handled pretty shit. As someone who likes DC Comics, I believe the levels and Open-World for it are utter shit and super bland. Back to The Future also had a pretty shit level in the main story campaign, but I cannot comment on the World or Level Pack.

Personally, the game got really good with the Simpsons, Adventure Time, Portal, Doctor Who, Ghost Busters, Scooby Doo and Sonic. The rest are a bit…eh? I am not a fan of most others though.

Also, avoid Wii U. The system cannot handle Year 2 well.

The 3rd LEGO Batman is one of my most hated from the list above. It is an average LEGO title, but it has a ton of annoyances that I attribute to post-Batman 2 LEGO. Levels can feel way too long and bland, no open world, and the identity of the game is all over the place. It tries to be a large celebration of DC, mainly Batman, but comes off wrong. The character roster wants to stroke off Batman, yet the story centers around Green Lantern. D-list Batman villains like Condiment King appear, yet big names like Scarecrow do not until DLC. The tone is also all over as you have a DCAU styled campaign, yet huge chunks are dedicated to West’s Batman, Daffy Duck, and other weird DC references like Arnold Mr. Freeze.

I would say skip 3. It is a really weak entry.

As for DC Supervillains, it is he best LEGO game made as of right now. Levels are compact and interesting, the roster is full of DC big hitters, the open world is fantastic, and the graffiti punk style is super refreshing for the series. They absolutely knocked it out of the park with Super Vilains. It feels like the true successor to LEGO Batman in a way that Batman 2&3 never could be.


LEGO Marvel suffers from overly-long levels like most games post-Batman 2, but everything else is solid. Skip every other Marvel title as Disney cucked them to a point where their characters and locals could never match the original.

Also wanted to add that I missed out on both LEGO Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Due to rights issues, both games were removed from digital store fronts, and while the physical copies can still be bought, the dlc is no longer available. Still might pick up a copy of LotR at some point, I love the books and the movies.

Yeah from gameplay footage I've seen, it looks like a step down from the other 2 LEGO Batman titles. I'll give it credit for including some personal favorite DC characters (Plastic Man, Platinum, Captain Marvel/Shazam, Blue Beetle, King Shark, and the Green Loontern).

On that note, the graffiti punk style is something I'd like to see more of, not just in LEGO games, but other games as well. It's an interesting art direction that is underutilized.

I played the Lego City Undercover game for the 3DS a few years ago... apparently it's a prequel to the WiiU one. I remember actually liking it... so much so that I made an attempt to unlock everything in it and explore the entire open world. Took some time to do it, shit was bigger than I thought.

Great game. Looking back it's surprising it took that long for there to be an open world LEGO game like that. Biggest issue with the game is that I would have liked for them to have added in some older/classic minifigs as playable characters. The UFO theme needs more love, dammit.

Can't believe they haven't made a sequel (or at the very least added some more content as DLC).
 
The first Lego Indy was the peak and it's been downhill since. Can't beat Sean Connery in Lego form.
