The thing is, I don’t see how that most of these guys could be trooning out because of trauma, because then you’d expect massive numbers of Vietnam era SF guys to have done this, those guys had like strings of ears and stuff. And when modern SF guys have heavy trauma loads, they seem to mostly murder each other/their wives/get into drugs/kill themselves.

Also, there are a lot of these guys (like Kevin Gibes? It gets normalized because for a long time your initial exposure to the gay community is through these dudes who go out looking for these vulnerable kids who are usually not out to their families, and hiding this part of their lives.
