Dune is overrated. Not bad, just overrated.

I'm super curious for Nightmare Alley, are they judging the version in color or black and white? It's a better movie in black and white and could win for best cinematography is that's the version used to judge it.

I think Dr. Strange wins best actor due to the "Historically unprecedented and glass ceiling breaking" Power of Dog which I didn't think was very good but c'est la vie.

If he doesn't, Will Smith may finally get that Oscar he's been slobbering for since 7 Pounds.

Javier Bardem deserves it though.

Won't watch it but good luck to all involved.

Aside from Dune, I ain’t watched shit on that list. I did really like it, but that’s mainly because I felt that Villeneuve did a great job of flexing with the visuals in a way that the OG sci-fi story deserved in my opinion.
It also had Jason Mamoa, or as I call him, ‘Daddy’, so that’s another plus.

Luca is great. I expected another straight-to-streaming throwaway after the shitty Onward and Soul and the pointless cash-ins Toy Story 4 and Incredibles 2 but it was almost as good as Coco. Highly recommended.

It was great, I don’t agree with Soul, Toy Story 4 and The incredibles 2 being bad though. Soul was genuinely an imaginative film with some ideas taht were perhaps too ambitious for the acope of a kids film could be. Toy story 4 wasn’t incredible but it’s still a good, sweet film with absolutely phenomenal animation and felt like a good ‘final ending for Woodys character arc. Incredibles 2 was definitely a cash crab but still a pretty exciting and entertaining one at that. Onward was pretty shitty admittedly and they did little to nothing with these modern fantasy premise, the film was dull throughout and didn’t go anywhere.

Back on Topic this years list is mostly predictable, choosing the most obvious and least interesting films for best picture, although having a Japanese film nominated is a nice change m. Maybe Hollywood finally picked up on the popularity of Asian cinema/ shows with Squid Games recent success. Who knows, other than that it’s a welcome change. I haven’t seen most of the others here though since streaming has taken over so I can’t comment on the rest of the picks. Can anyone tell me if it’s a fair list?

Well I've heard of Dune. And I thought Licorice Pizza was a sitcom. I'll admit I paid no attention to the commercial when it was on last. I kinda remember a new West Side Story.

I find myself becoming rather fond on Jesse Plemmons despite him being rather bizarre looking.

I have no idea what the hell is going on movie-wise these days. The newest one I saw was 1917. And my family didn't like it because there weren't enough war scenes. They said it was just a guy running around doing nothing.

“Drive My Car” is probably the only Japanese movie that deserves Oscar attention, and I think it will follow “Parasite” and Chlóe Zhao as the next big international acts that made Hollywood get scared that they’re losing their American fans to the likes of Asian made countries.

I think Dr. Strange wins best actor due to the "Historically unprecedented and glass ceiling breaking" Power of Dog which I didn't think was very good but c'est la vie.

Benedict Cumberbatch will only be known to me for Sherlock fame since I only thought he’d be good for TV roles. I guess I’ll be proven wrong, though.

Also, Will Smith only was nominated because he has been pro-BLM as of late, though his role in King Richard was just playing it safe in my opinion.

Well let’s hope a good movie wins since I barely care about the Oscars.

The fact that "Ron's Gone Wrong" wasn't considered for Best Animated Feature (or anything, really) while 3/5ths of the nominees are a Disney film is fucking disgusting.
Are you surprised? The best animated feature category are picked by people who don't watch all the films and just pick shit their kids watch. Encanto will probably win out of the three disney nominees due to it being nominated for other categories and more well-liked, but it doesn't matter anyway since Disney almost always wins

Are you surprised?
I'm not, but it's still frustrating. Ron's Gone Wrong at least aired in theaters, The Mitchells vs. The Machine and Luca (which I liked btw) didn't even though they were supposed to. Movies that go exclusively to streaming should be in their own categories at this point, if you ask me. I have no idea what Flee is, though.

*Googles*

Oh, it's a Danish "arthouse" animated film. Can't really complain because foreign films need more attention, but still, who even knew about this movie to begin with? It clearly only got nominated because it stars a gay man.

So which one do you think will won Best Picture? I really hope it's either Dune or Drive My Car, especially Dune. But knowing Oscar, it's probably something else that doesn't deserve the win

What? We're allowing chink and jap movies in the Best Picture category now? If you're allowing world movies to compete with movies in the English-speaking Anglosphere, then every Oscar nomination list should look like one of the YMS guy's "Best Picture of X Year" lists. Because America sure as hell ain't turning out the best movies in the world right now.

And you're telling me they couldn't find any French or Japanese animated films to compete with "Raya and the Last Dragon?" Bullshit. If they're going to let furr'nurs compete, they should at least be consistent about it and not let American companies squat on certain categories...

If only there was a movie about a black gay teen coming to terms with his own gayness as he drives an old white lady around the South during the Civil Rights days. That would be a dead lock cinch.
