It means John Carmack let Romero win, since Carmack is the benevolent hyperintelligent architect of the post-singularity simulation we all live in.

If you need more F-tier there's Shrek, Episode 200, Sonic 06 both parts, Legend of Kage, maybe Wrestling Games.
oh shrek was T R A S H. I've never seen such a bad direction at scenario and acting and the way it tried to shit on shrek in such a CinemaSins way (the way how they try to get views because "haha popular animated movie bad") made it legit one of the worst episodes.

to be fair i remember James doing everything on his own because of Covid back then. that's probably why the quality was laughable.

Well maybe it's not that bad, I haven't watched it since it came out so it could actually be a classic!

Let's see... Opens with the Nerd in bondage, not very flattering. Spends 5 minutes whining about wanting to watch Shrek. Halfway through he finally starts a Shrek game! Talks about it extremely briefly and it's meh. Says Shrek is overrated, even though most of the video has been about wanting to rewatch it.

Kidnapped by Shrek Cult, lame plot-twist that they were testing him, weird soyboy kisses James and they kill him for Shrek or whatever.

Huh. If you want to say the movie's overrated, then just make a video about the damn movie! Fear and Loathing sucked but at least it was about paying homage to a film James probably loves. This... What even was this? F-.

James (it was probably Justin who decided it though) made it even more laughable with the vague Chris-Chan reference.

When you have no passion for your work, your work sucks. When you do, it tends to be better. It's more fun to watch him do retro/nostalgia reviews now than pretend to be mad at some shitty title from 1998 that he never played when he was a kid anyway.

I unironically miss James and Mike Monday's. It reminded me a lot of going to a friends house and just trying out games. It was low budget, comfy as hell and is better than anything else he's made in the post-Board James era.

So they did a video where they played with old ninja turtle toys and I liked it, then I felt weird because i m over 40 and....how long and much nostalgia can you get high on.

I found my old nintendo power issues, and and I wanted to throw them away and then I looked at them and remembered being in grade school, and now they are back in the closet.

I'd rather watch James fall asleep while Mike screams about dying in ancient games, than the podcast or the new cut and paste avgn they do now.

Another cool mini-series would be looking at those old Holiday Catalogs from the Wish List episode. Each episode just pick a different book and highlight all the cool, wacky, obsurd stuff in them.

I’m late but I found this very interesting. I think this would be a good direction for the channel to go in. Just him making videos about stuff he finds interesting that pertains to movies and games and the like. The AVGN vids will still happen and I’ll still watch them cuz I usually get a few chuckles out of them, but the newer ones are mostly a one and done for me.

Looks like the screenwave guys will be pushed into the background, GOOD!
They tried something with the podcast but nobody cares about Justin and Kieran. People want to see James and Mike, with occasional guests like Scott the Woz or Jontron or even Kyle Justin.

That VHS video was such a breath of fresh air that I hope he makes that the majority of the Non AVGN content. No podcast, no Rex Viper, none of that shit.
Also, the Red Cow media guys are still losers.

One of my top 5 episodes was the Christmas one where he kicked it off by looking at the Christmas catalog, because he did such a great job encapsulating that feeling of childhood excitement and joy reading one of those had. Just the right music, zoom-ins on little things like the smiling Santa on the TV set, even covering the goofy little situations where you'd turn the page after looking at toys straight into ads for tobacco, lingerie, knives, or whatever. And he seemed so enthusiastic, too.

Facts dude. More of this shit is what we need.

And it would still fit within the realms of the channel as he's always done these sort of nostalgic lookbacks. It's a niche that he would do great in. Hell do it for all types of magazines, I'm sure he's read some movie or music mags before.

Also a lot of you think the Nintendo World Championship is the worst of the golden era, but I'm gonna have to say it's the Odyssey video. Pat is a charisma vaccum so that video was always going to be meh with him, but the Odyssey video had potential. The main drawback is the "guest", it's so stupid and childish even by his standards. If it wasn't for that it'd be great.

That’s interesting cuz I love the Odyssey video. Some of my favorite videos are his console review vids where he breezes through the games and focuses on the console itself.
As for eras, I personally think the worst era of AVGN is the 2012-2014 period where he was making the movie and we were getting videos like Desert Bus and Hong Kong 97.

It’s a pretty soy answer but I really liked his Earthbound episode. He didn’t suck it off but he also wasn’t an ass about it. It felt more like James talking then the Nerd, and that was something I kinda enjoyed. He had the same experience as me being like, “I kinda feel like shit for not playing this earlier, but saying it’s the creme de le creme is exaggerative, and had it’s issues.”

I mean, of course I like the nerd, but there’s a kind of rare magic when he like. Genuinely enjoys something despite it‘s flaws, where the nerd and James become one guy, almost like a balance is struck and suddenly I get this perfect vision of what I want out of his content in the future. He also hits this when he sees something negative but with a lot of potential. That one’s more rare but that same kind of energy occurs.

He’s analytical but still hitting the humorous stuff, he’s not an overbearing skit pusher but still dabbles in something pretty distinctly him. Having that I feel not only please the audience, but please him too. Directors, aspiring ones to be, want to have their own flare to their content wether they enjoy creating it or not, and I feel like he’s balance expression without the cost of the content itself.

What that James flare is I can’t really verbalize, I’ve never been a guy that’s good with words, but we all know what it is, right?

TL;DR- I’m happy James is chasing what he enjoys with the style we know him for with the effort, and creative energy he wants to have. I think this will be best for everyone and looking back on the videos I enjoy, that’s my hope for how this will turn out.
