Not to mention Abkhazia and Georgia were having problems years before direct Russian involvement, as the former is a very ethnically distinct region which desired autonomy but Georgia wanted to treat as just another province. South Ossetia to a lesser degree as well.

Also the talks between Germany France Russia and Ukraine ended without an agreed joint statement which means Russia isn't on a happy path diplomatically

On the bright side, we might finally get some real data on whether tanks are obsolete on the modern battlefield due to ATGM's as Russia's finest go up against the very latest and best Western missile that were close to expiry and so could be offloaded on a bunch of poor hicks!

Probably dick measuring until the end of the year, unless someone fucks up and goes too far and accidentally unleashes WW3.

It's in the Democrats' interest to keep beating the war drum because midterms and the fact that keeping 'muh Russia' fear high is something that bolsters them, because they've crafted the narrative that everything that isn't explicitly part of their platform is a Russian plot. Putin has to respond in kind because he can't afford to look weak. Eastern Europeans will continue to look on and keep their powder dry. Western Europeans will continue to um and err.
