One reason I think they picked the Lord of the Rings is that if you look at the aesthetics in a superficial way they might resemble Westeros. The other is that Tolkien is a well know brand that people outside of D&D circles have heard of. There are plenty of other successful fantasies set in worlds with their beloved diversity already natural and present, like Robert E. Howards' Conan. I still think Thulsa Doom is James Earl Jones best villain. On the other hand, I think they are taking a certain amount of glee in this, like HBO did when they made Lovecraft Country and Watchmen. Moviebob in this case is acting as the Mouth of these streaming services unfiltered ID.
