How do they want to do this? Are they going to stop and check the contents of every large truck? Check their political party registration?

If they let traffic through at normal rates, they'll end up with a new blockade in days. If they slow it down immensely to do in-depth checks on every trucker, the traffic will be so slow as to cause many of the delays and supply chain consequences they were trying to avoid.

Protesters are gathering on the US side of the peace bridge. I can't really lock the info down definitively as the only source is local and behind a pay wall.

But apparently several hundred protesters have gathered in a park near the bridge and New York State police are doing everything they can to prevent them heading out onto the bridge.

That's what I love about this protest. Even after you clear the protestors, how are you going to prevent this from happening again? All you need is one truck to fuck everything back up.

Say this bridge opens back up tomorrow. One truck drives up. Refuses to move. Then what? Well, I guess the police could arrest him. Butttttt, then you have to wait on a tow truck to come and get it. Meanwhile, this truck is causing a huge line to build up... some of them might even be more protestors... and now it's right back to long travel delays.
