Luckily I'm in a province that has spoken up against the emergency powers. But because of that, advising friends and family to stock up their pantries. Worst case scenario for us, as I see it, is our PM's push hard against the emergency powers, allow protests etc and Trudeau overreacts again with an actual lockdown/martial law scenario in the region. Not expecting it to be violent, but I'd rather if things did go to absolute shit, that they don't gotta go out into the streets with it afoot.

Its absolutely paranoid as hell, but so was the idea that Canada would go this hard at it, so I'm not discounting anything at this point.

You know I was told that protests were supposed to make people uncomfortable and disrupt things, which is why it's A-OK to burn down buildings, loot businesses, attack random people in the streets, and basically try to overthrow a city because a druggie died.

Now apparently truckers setting up bouncy castles on roads blocking urbanite commerce because of government overreach is bad because it makes people upset?

Really getting mixed messages here. Maybe that's why Castreau is going full authoritarian - he can't get his soylent shipped in time.

You know, I'm not a total urbanite, but I'm closer to that than I am a farmer or a trucker.

But didn't we all, like, universally decide we valued individual liberty until about ten years ago? Wasn't that a concept that nearly the entire world agreed was a good idea, save for a few backward, legacy communist states?

It's like I fell into some kind of ideological wormhole in 2012 and ended up in a universe where half the population of the west not only accepts but demands open, brazen authoritarianism in their own societies.

That flexibility, in part, has fuelled its growth among certain groups, said Barbara Perry, director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism at the Oshawa-based Ontario Tech University.

It's also a term that has thrived among far-right groups, said Perry, one of a number of experts who say the presence of far-right groups in Canada is growing.

As seen among some protesters currently opposing vaccine mandates and other public health measures, freedom signals a desire for freedom from government intervention or overreach, Perry noted.

Convoy protesters are calling for an end to all vaccine mandates, as well as other pandemic-related restrictions. Canada Unity — one of the main organizing groups behind the protests — says on its website that it's committed to "upholding freedom of choice" for Canadians.

Evan Balgord, executive director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, says the way many protesters frame their calls for freedom renders the word meaningless — and what they're really asking for is a shift in government policy that could potentially have a negative impact on others.

"When they're yelling they care so much about their freedom, they're taking freedoms away from other people who don't have the same kind of agency and choice that they do," he said.
To see the word freedom bandied about as part of these protests points to a broader circulation of what Elisabeth Anker calls "violent" forms of freedom.

"Freedom is a slippery concept," said Anker, an associate professor of political science at George Washington University and author of Ugly Freedoms, which examines the history of how freedom, as a concept, has been used in American society.

"On the far right, [individual freedom] is often translated into somebody who refuses to be bound by norms of equality, treating all people equally or norms to remedy inequality, whether that's trying to remedy racial discrimination or gender discrimination."

If you're one of these protesters the Government considers you a terrorist and if you're someone helping them you're aiding and embedding and they will take every penny they can from you.

I'm not even surprised that Canada is this tin-fisted, any "democratic" country with no gun rights is just a closeted dictatorship. If you protest them, they'll just take your shit.

If you don't have gun rights, you have no bank rights, you have no land rights, you have no speech rights.

Problem for Canuckistan though is their tinpot government is weak & frail anyway, so the longer this lasts for the less support they'll receive & the less leverage they'll have. They've resorted to stupid things like confiscating gas & insurance, things which the trucks cannot be moved without. They've also done horrifying & despicable things like stealing money from Canadian citizens & the Americans who gave these peaceful protestors money.

Then there's the hypocrisy of it all, Trudeau supported the trucker protest in India when it happened there & even gave them millions of Canuck-bucks, & now he's literally running away from his own constituency & playing the victim. I refuse to believe he's in genuine fear of his life, and if he is then lol. I don't understand why anybody ever thought Trudeau was cool, the guy was always a faggoty tinpot dictator in sheep's clothing, it was always obvious.

I really hope this ends with Trudeau putting a gun in his mouth & pulling the trigger, and unlike the common Canuckicuck, I am smugly free to say so. Because guns.
