So yeah, since most Chinese people working in horrendous conditions in sweat shops make $2.50 per day so that China can make the misleading claim that they have "eliminated poverty". Also notice how Mao was a key figure in almost half of what I mentioned.

That’s not to say China is a paradise. Even in the cities there are people forced to live in tiny apartments with their entire families if they’re lucky enough to have a family. There’s a black market trade for things as basic as cigarettes because while yes the cost of living is low there, so are wages. China can say it eliminated poverty all day. Okay but they’ve also got fixed prices that they adjust according to inflation. It’s not terribly different than the US letting the markets dictate prices but the states in charge now so even vendors have trouble selling their products unless they can also do it under the table.

Even then minorities were allowed to have up to 4 kids and the myth of that one child policy mostly extends to major urban areas where they could enforce it. Even then it was really common for you to hand your daughter off to your childless aunt or to send you other son to live with relatives overseas. I’m generalizing a lot but something like that.
