Not gonna be able to lend a hand despite how much fun this sounds like it'll be, but I'll throw out a suggestion: Millennial creators seem to really love/rely heavily on snark for humor and/or character "dynamic", hence why so many shows these days have multiple snarky characters. This hurts comedic timing and chemistry between characters because everyone comes off like an immature jackass. There's a reason there was typically only ever one comedic relief character in any given series up until sometime in the 2000s, though in gag dubs, everyone will throw in their hat into the snarky quips/roasting ring in their own special way.
So you're gonna have to pick which character will be more than likely to be snarky, and then decide on if the characters are going to have any of their crap because they're not taking things seriously, or if there's a snark/straightman duo. The more natural the character is, the better. Character growth may be he loses his snark but gains wisdom in the process, or he learns how to snark at the more appropriate times.
EDIT: Snarking could be the character's way of coping with something, but they'll still need to have character growth to get over the cope.
...Throw in a pervert for good measure, too (or maybe the snarky character is the pervert). HGS was supposed to have been inspired by anime but clearly cherry-picked what tropes to play with, and you are obligated as an aspiring creator to have a perverted character to show that yes, you do understand anime tropes and you do respect anime as-is, boobs and all.
I second this. Lots of medias nowadays hated using tropes and character cliches, sinplay because they don't want to. The thing is, anime often used them, either playing it straight or playing with it. So an anime-inspired media definitely needed to use tropes and such, especially for characters
Another thing to add that a lof of people don't realized yet about the difference in anime and western media is in themes and messages. Yes, anime do often have themes and messages. But more often than not they're very simple or general you can relate to it anyway you can. Sure, sometimes how they express the themes are complicated, but usually they're much more simpler or general compared to western media
Examples:
One Piece= Chasing your dreams no matter the obstacles
Getter Robo= Believing in yourself and creating your own fates
Gurren Lagann= also believing in yourself (it's inspired by Getter, after all)
Gundam= The youth must take actions for the future of earth
Attack on Titan= Keeping up hope no matter the situation (this is before the series decline into "genocide is the answer"
Now you see why anime is popular
worldwide, compared to western media, because their themes and messages are so simple and general anyone from the east to the west can relate to that. Compare that to a lot of the western media's who not only required knowledge about things in the west, but often so topical it gets outdated in a few years or months
Sadly, this is something that a lot of anime-inspired media didn't do yet, simply because more often than not, the creators only took the superficial things from anime, not the core of what makes them popular (and sells)
I end my sperging here
