High Guardian Spice - Tumblr: The CalArt Anime

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
In short: turns ou that Crunchyroll had a worse influence over the series than we thought. They really were crunched in several ways (including only having a handful of months of production) before Crunchyroll put out a terrible, pandering trailer, shelved the series anyways (while not letting the people who worked on the series take advantage of the delay at launch), and released the series after everything blew over. Most of the other Crunchyroll Originals were actually outsourced t other companies, whereas High Guardian Spice was in-house. A lot of people who worked on the series wanted to explain, but Crunchyroll would not le them.

Oh, and even the people who worked on High Guardian Spice disliked the pandering trailer.
Thanks.

Except the Pandering Trailer is the only reason Sony greenlit them getting their CR slot

You also have to wonder how much of them complaining is genuine or just hind site being 20/20. Did they really feel this at the time or did they have three years to fester and embitter themselves towards the show, getting called out for bad representation while having a convenient scapegoat in CR is enough to make me believe at least some of them are trying to save face.

They were part of the whole "Women in Animation" org. EZPZ did a video on it.

I watched so many review videos on High Guardian Spice.
To my slight embarrassment, I feel that I can recap the general story of the series without having actually watched the programme itself.

Either way, there are a couple of interesting videos on thi series.
The following is one that goes into the background of the series, him actually having talked to the people who actually worked on the series.
The aforementioned vide on the writing:
Running defense a little hard there, huh Daft?
The thing that catches my ear the most is that HGS was meant to be a "slow burn shonen not-an-manga/anime that they won't make it to the school until the end of the season" type for the comic (that never came out) before it became a show.
I question that a bit because it at least implies that they had a direction or at least an idea for the series, but the train wreck that is the first episode leads me to think otherwise. I won't think a faster pace would cause a complete trashing of what you have to get to the school on the first episode. Like, "Move the school up, give the main girls their own focus episodes over the next few stories" seems like a no-brainer even with that crunch, but that may very well be hindsight talking.
Doesn't really change my thoughts on HGS at any rate.

It also makes me wonder what they meant by "slow burn Shonen" since most Shonen series still manage to have a seasonal arc with a finale.

The more time passes the more I'm convinced magical fantasy schools are literary poison for any good stories. Just like real life public schools. 🚬

I saw the tweet with this video and the comments on the video itself being mostly people saying they feel bad for Raye now after watching and huffing this guy(?)'s farts for "giving the crew a voice".

That video was just another white knighting AKSCHUALLY slog for a failed show. As for feeling bad for Raye? Fucking FORGET IT. She/he's another rich bitch from cali who was given the path meant for a talented creator to florish and squandered it when it was apparent she didn't have an original idea to save himself. Raye was sheltered beyond belief and her being the ringmaster of a shit circus was fated given how easy she is to manipulate. Made even more apparent with becoming a "he" based on cooming to too much yaoi. Fuck Raye, fuck CR and fuck this guy for thinking he's doing anybody involved in this failure any favors.

You know, I'll give Daft a break on this one. Everyone's already shat on it, what more would he add by saying "Heh, high guardian spice sucks, amirite?!"?

These school fantasy things are more like noob traps. Everyone thinks it would be fun to be in a magical school and learn magical shit (thanks to Harry Potter and Anime), but in reality, its a done to death nonesense trope that no one really likes to expand on.

Sony bought them out way later. AT&T was the original owner of CR when HGS was greenlit, the same company that couldn’t even handle running genuine household names HBO and Warner Bros and had to spin both of those out into its own company.

Same guy that will interviews pedophiles but deny interviewing an incel btw.

So, gonna give a progress report on exactly what's happening with the project, since I've been pretty quiet on its status. I have a very rough, but stable outline down with the story beats, how the magic works (because I actally give an iota of a crap about consistency) , world building (monotheistic with smatterings of wiccan/nature worship and Wicker Man-esque sacrifice for affronts to the God of the world), and some serious retooling of characters that I handpicked from this dung heap of a show.
I decided that since the group is made up of flower-named protags, antags, and the like, "Flowers of Annalise" has become its working title.
As for the medium, it's going to be a tossup between a visual novel or an Rpg. I do have a bit of experience working with Aseprite and Rpg Maker, albeit only the PSX version of Maker, I am very willing to relearn how to use RPGMaker.
Between this and my actual job, I might have some more character art and/or a landscape or two down, along with some animals and monsters to look at by the end of next week.

So basically Snoot Game - High Guardian Spice Edition eh? I'm down, especially if it gets the same "REEEEEEE STOP BEING BETTER THAN ME" response from its creator

I can help you out with some dialogue writing, just to take some work off your shoulders. My experiences was writing plays, so I found writing dialogues easier than narrative exposition

Not gonna be able to lend a hand despite how much fun this sounds like it'll be, but I'll throw out a suggestion: Millennial creators seem to really love/rely heavily on snark for humor and/or character "dynamic", hence why so many shows these days have multiple snarky characters. This hurts comedic timing and chemistry between characters because everyone comes off like an immature jackass. There's a reason there was typically only ever one comedic relief character in any given series up until sometime in the 2000s, though in gag dubs, everyone will throw in their hat into the snarky quips/roasting ring in their own special way.

So you're gonna have to pick which character will be more than likely to be snarky, and then decide on if the characters are going to have any of their crap because they're not taking things seriously, or if there's a snark/straightman duo. The more natural the character is, the better. Character growth may be he loses his snark but gains wisdom in the process, or he learns how to snark at the more appropriate times.
EDIT: Snarking could be the character's way of coping with something, but they'll still need to have character growth to get over the cope.

...Throw in a pervert for good measure, too (or maybe the snarky character is the pervert). HGS was supposed to have been inspired by anime but clearly cherry-picked what tropes to play with, and you are obligated as an aspiring creator to have a perverted character to show that yes, you do understand anime tropes and you do respect anime as-is, boobs and all.

I second this. Lots of medias nowadays hated using tropes and character cliches, sinplay because they don't want to. The thing is, anime often used them, either playing it straight or playing with it. So an anime-inspired media definitely needed to use tropes and such, especially for characters

Another thing to add that a lof of people don't realized yet about the difference in anime and western media is in themes and messages. Yes, anime do often have themes and messages. But more often than not they're very simple or general you can relate to it anyway you can. Sure, sometimes how they express the themes are complicated, but usually they're much more simpler or general compared to western media

Examples:
One Piece= Chasing your dreams no matter the obstacles
Getter Robo= Believing in yourself and creating your own fates
Gurren Lagann= also believing in yourself (it's inspired by Getter, after all)
Gundam= The youth must take actions for the future of earth
Attack on Titan= Keeping up hope no matter the situation (this is before the series decline into "genocide is the answer"

Now you see why anime is popular worldwide, compared to western media, because their themes and messages are so simple and general anyone from the east to the west can relate to that. Compare that to a lot of the western media's who not only required knowledge about things in the west, but often so topical it gets outdated in a few years or months

Sadly, this is something that a lot of anime-inspired media didn't do yet, simply because more often than not, the creators only took the superficial things from anime, not the core of what makes them popular (and sells)

I end my sperging here

Not me. I've always said "this is mostly Crunchy Roll's fault".
I certainly have. After seeing their originals and how most of them look as bad as HGS (seriously, Nobelese, Gibiate and Freakangels look utterly horrendous on a fundamental level while HGS just looks like the Korean animators hired didn't want to put their best on it), I got to wonder how much money CR even had to fund their label to begin with.

I like how Patrick Rothfuss did it in his novels. It's basically magical chem/physics lab. And all the interesting magic has to be learned outside of the school. Realism! Now those books would make a good anime. But I think he gave the TV rights to that homo who did Hamilton.
