Ahaha. Buzzfeed has an article about this, and the headline says, "Victoria's Secret Introduced Its First Model With Down Syndrome, and I'm Like 'Finalllllllllllly.'"

I know the author is trying to get woke points or whatever, but to a normal person, that makes him look unspeakably perverted. Who has always wanted to see a mentally handicapped person model lingerie?

The sub headline says, "There are no limits." Now I want to see how true this is. When will we see a dementia patient used to advertise lingerie? How about a quadruple amputee? A man with a horribly burned face?

Or even let's just see some inspiration porn featuring your average male downie if they really want to put their money where their mouth is. It's the diversity equivalent of corporate greenwash.

Showing how accepting of disabled people you are (but only as long as they look kinda fuckable).

Anna must be seething with jealousy. Downs beats out super fats as sexy swimsuit model. :).

I went and watched a couple videos of Julia. One was an interview, with questions like “what is your favorite color?” and other vapidities. They did ask if Downs limited her and she said no. She wants to conquer the world.

Caveat, it’s totally in Spanish and I’m by no means fluent, I had it in school for 8 years and that is it. However, I found her easy to understand, which may tell you the level of her answers. Plus, she speaks slowly. She seems to consider herself a mogul and has a clothing/accessories line called Alovit, for I Love It, her trademark phrase. She has a very large family, who I’m sure are the brains behind everything.

She seems to be a bubbly, ambitious mentally 12 year old with a weirdly deep, Miley Cyrus voice, who rehearsed answered the simple questions (as it seems she stopped and started over a couple times.)

The other video I saw appeared to be a birthday (?) where they treated her like a celeb and she wore a gold sequin dress. She didn’t speak much and the person speaking spoke too quickly for my level, so I only got phases like she’s happy, etc.

My opinion is this is a family operation, using her (with her permission) to move up into the world and demystify Downs. She’s looked Downie in a lot of the videos, her eyes, mouth and hands especially, plus she’s short, but certainly has a milder case. I’ve seen TV actors with Downs and she seems to be at that level. From what I heard, and understood, she can answer questions, but I didn’t see a conversation. Because I’m not fluent in the language, my opinion might be off, but it all sounded like an excited child to me. She signed off with “kisses to all” several times.

If there are fluent Spanish speakers, watch her vids and see if my opinion is correct.

So far, I see no cowdom signs in her family, but there is little out there, and I don’t think she’s so intellectually disabled she can’t dream, but she’ll need help.

There's a comment on the article and I can't tell if it's a troll or not:

"Ableism causes society to view disabled people as both asexual and unattractive. Regardless of your views about Victoria's Secret or the modeling industry, hiring disabled models is extremely important. Support disabled models! Fight internalized ableism on sexuality!"

That's right, if you don't see people with Down syndrome as sexy, you are ableist.

Honestly, it's not weird to have people with Down syndrome model clothing. That's perfectly good. But lingerie? Eh, that's a bit weird, and it gets weirder and screwier when people insist everyone - including people with serious mental disabilities - must be seen as sexy.

Call me MATI, but the reason why people don't sexualize mentally disabled individuals is the same reason why people don't sexualize children. When an adult is prancing around in a g-string and pasties, they know that even if they are empowerment twerking, there are going to be several people out there who have a burning desire to rip off their clothes and bang them until someones' hip explodes. They know and are very well aware that they are being inciting to someone; can someone who can barely tie their shoes also have that same level of comprehension?

I know that many parents of mentally disabled kid and adults who love to share every detail about their child's life enjoy stating how "smart" their kid is, but most of the time these kids are just parroting statements their parents have said to them without actually comprehending the meaning behind what they are stating. Hell, this is why many downies are really trusting and some are incredibly rapey, they have rudimentary cause and effect thought processes (i.e. if I tug on my penis, it feels really good).

I rember working with an incredibly rapey Downie. He was huge and going through puberty. The staff bascially managed him by bundling him into the toilet where he could spank it until he no longer wanted to pull the girl-tards clothes off them.
Really quite scary. This prettification of disability doesn't help anyone.

If you Google image Sofia Jirau there are much more unflattering photos of her out there, and they make her DS more obvious IMO.

The bikini shots make me uncomfortable, it isn’t appropriate at all.

To be fair I know plenty of normal adult women who look just like this lady

Yeah there's a reoccurring AHS actress with downs (who is especially good in Coven and Freakshow) whose also done some modeling and while I'm so she does have issues she needs help with, she seems like she has shit about as together as you can with a trisomy.

While the concerns about exploitation and abuse of intellectually disabled adults are valid and relevant, with more mildly disabled ones especially it's important not to infantilize them either. They don't like that shit any more than a non-disabled person would, and should be able to have the same privileges as other adults.

Idk it's totally a woke PR move and I get the concerns, but I'm also wary about infantilizing adults with more mild intellectual disabilities since I know it's something that's also an issue.

The thing with intellectual disability (or disorders like autism) is that there isn't always a hard line between "this person is 100% able to understand sex/sexualization and its consequences, and therefore is able to consent" and "this person doesn't completely get it" - someone might be able to understand the idea of sex having consequences, but not be able to conceptualize it actually happening to them until it does.
It's a particularly difficult can of worms, but "better safe than sorry" is probably the correct choice when it comes to something that can get really fucked up really quickly.

ETA: am autistic, not just talking out my ass here

The main problem in my mind is by advertising that retarded people have sexual agency is how you draw that line. It’s not like the adult/minor line where it’s been determined anyone over 18 is able to consent.

People with down’s marrying other people with downs is viewed as good and even very sweet. But what about an adult of normal intelligence marrying or having a sexual relationship with a person with Down syndrome?

I’ve told this PL before but years ago in college I had to deal with a retarded woman who didn’t look retarded, but I estimate was in the high functioning downie range of intelligence. She was 26 and seven kids. When I met her the 7th child was two months old and the rest of the children were in the care of the state or a cousin. She liked “babies” only until they started walking or crawling. The only reason the babies even remained in her care for a few months was thanks to many aides and caseworkers being there most of the daylight hours. The push was on while I was there to get her on the depo shot because she liked having babies and apparently talking about sterilizing was verboten but even long term BC was something being done sort of on the DL and only after years of convincing her to agree to it. (Her parents were either dead or long gone, so no guardians to make this choice for her.)

In the end all the advice and encouragement did mean Jack, but a frustrated caseworker just offering her $50 did the trick and she happily agreed. But no one could ever reveal she was given money. (The retarded woman was able to keep the secret because if she knew if she told anyone she wouldn’t get $50 every four months for getting her depo shot)

The issue of retarded people and sex is very complex and besides their own well being the issue of reproduction looms large. Hollywood fantasies aside retarded people cannot care or raise children.

Idk "better safe than sorry" for me is why I tend to veer toward assuming competence, especially since I'm a literal autist and have been on the receiving end of patronizing, infantilizing bullshit (and interacted with similarly aged people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities that also hate that shit). Though even the most competent person in the world isn't going to know a thing about healthy boundaries, consent, abuse, etc if they aren't taught about it. Even in states that are better about comprehensive sex ed, sped kids aren't necessarily getting that education, since sped is a garbage fire and half the time the kids aren't really being taught anything so much as babysat. Especially at alternative schools.

Hell, I know theres a documentary out there about two people with downs getting married. So adults on the more mild to moderate end of things can enjoy adult privileges and rights.

I do think them having kids is definitely more complicated, and another reason why comprehensive sex ed is important even for sped kids. They need to learn about contraception and potential consequences of sex just like everyone else.

Yeah that does remind me that I know a lot of autists, even high functioning ones that don't have any comorbid intellectual disability, don't like dating anyone that isn't autistic or has at least ADHD or something like that just because of how hard it is to maintain relationships with neurotypical people and a lot of times the neurotypical partner doesn't really understand them or they have too many times been taken advantage by neurotypical people.

Doesn't help that a lot of times, a neurotypical person can be the same age as the autistic person, but in a totally different place in life compared to them and not at the same level of independence as them.

What you just said is also true for many NORMAL people, especially teenagers.

The Victoria's Secret thing reminds me of 'Light in the Piazza'.

tbh there are some models and beauty pageant contestants who strike me as clicker-trained mongs. So I'm torn when it comes to bringing in somebody visibly developmentally disabled. I'm happy for her on a personal level, she seems good at it and enjoys it, but everyone knows you can't bone a tard. That's like the second or third rule when you own a weiner.

Stetson's mother is having a lot of issues with grief that sadly don't seem to be being looked into:

Wow what a narcissist, tryna shame their"friends" for not reaching out, but it's clearly a message to her fans.. she must miss all the asspats of being a mommy of a potato. she needs the narc supply still , has she nothing that can feed it?

Hollywood fantasies aside retarded people cannot care or raise children.
Due to a summer volunteering at a day program for retarded teens I got to interact with this very unique family. Basically, tard+tard=tard and they did have full custody, and did "technically" cared for and raised him, though I don't know how much outside help they had with that. By the time he was in this day program though it was pretty bad because they obviously didn't have full-time (or even part-time) caretakers. So he would show up dirty, unwashed clothes, and was himself either poorly washed or outright dirty. No deodorant in the hot Arizona summer either. And on multiple occasions the adults (who got paid) would sit with him and explained thoroughly, yet simply, why he needed to wash himself, his clothes, and wear deodorant. He didn't see it as a problem because he didn't mind, and his parents didn't mind or force him to either, so why should we mind? So they would talk to the mother (the father never attempted to interact with us and always came off as being a definitely lower IQ compared to his wife and son, which is a feat in and of itself) and met the same resistance.

So while in theory it can be possible for the people who are very high functioning (and would probably just blend in as your stereotypical dumb redneck like in places like the hick town the Slaton sisters live in), the end result is pretty bad. Nobody in the family had an ambition beyond collecting their government checks (and food stamps) and doing whatever they wanted, which given the disgusting way they lived, that's probably for the best.

Side note: the mother could be absolutely hilarious in the mornings when the teens would get dropped off in the morning. On one occasion they had to sign permission slips to allow their kids to see a movie. There were something like four choices in total, and were given the option to choose, but ultimately their parents/guardians had to give permission for what they were and weren't allowed to see in the first place. So she glances down at the slip, then looks up and loudly asks "PG-13...is that like rated R?" So the parents had to spend five-ten minutes explaining that PG-13 is not the same as R before she finally understood.

On another day some of the parents were quietly talking about taking a weekend trip to Puerto Penasco down in Mexico (which is commonly referred to in Arizona as it's translated name, Rocky Point). They probably were talking quietly because she had a habit of being nosy and butting in, but she overheard anyways and the next thing I hear is her blurting out about Rocky Point being in some random city park. And then they had to explain that no, Rocky Point is in Mexico not in our city. I don't think she ever did understand that one.

I just hope that their kid didn't eventually hook up with a retarded girl of his own and produce his own third generation tard.
