There used to be a requirement of at least a year of therapy and steps before surgery (testing out social transitioning ,etc) all meant to make sure this life changing decision was REALLY wanted that had to be done before surgery could even be thought of. Now though as can be seen by her "therapist" attached to her process you just go to a session and get your approval letter and done. Scary thing is people pushing their children towards this will never see a real therapist they go to gender clinics set up specifically to troon out kids.

There's also their parents' complicity. There's a lot of malignant narcissist mothers who treat their daughters as competition, and are jealous of their youth and resent their children for what pregnancy and birth did to their bodies. This was the only reference to mental health or psychiatry/psychology I could find so it sounds like adults do not need psych referral for a mastectomy and even minors may not need one for breast augmentation. Even if I'm wrong and she does require psych screenings for augmentations or adult patients, there are therapists out there who will rubber stamp surgery recommendations and pro-trans Reddit boards will happily share their names so there is no real protection for patients here. Don't worry it gets worse, Sneed follows the "informed consent" model so her criteria for performing surgery is not "there is an objective benefit that outweighs the risks" but rather "the patient knows what s/he is signing up for and is unlikely to die from the surgery". The only people who would not qualify under this standard are patients with preexisting conditions and ones who are genuinely mentally retarded.

The large-boob hate started in earnest around the later 90s and really amped up in the 2000s with the popularity of "Heroin chic". It went from breasts being - as you said - something to gain attention, to something that was more shameful.
Just off the top of my head there was the idea that all large breasts were fake, the phrase "more than a handful is a waste", the popularity of "the larger the breasts, the less intelligent the women", "large breast = slut", and more recently, that it's "normal" to get breast reductions (so if you have an issue with large breasts you have no right to complain because you are "choosing" to keep them that way.

Class of 2012 was the last class to make it out.
I would not be surprised if you had a couple of people in your class who were closeted and are now hons. But back then, young troons were advised to make it quick and only tell their closest friends. Once transitioned, it was typical to change their names to something normal and move to a different city. If a troon was in highschool, the doctors advised them to not transition seriously until graduation. Instead of advertising their work on TikTok, someone like Gallagher would just give their card to psychiatrists and maybe put up vague fliers in gay bars and bookstores. Support groups only existed in large cities, and they spread through word of mouth.
