Chrono Trigger/Cross

Maybe this time they'll fix Harle's stupid text accent.
Maybe they'll re-retcon Guile to be magus. Maybe they'll make having Glenn not be detrimental to the story. Maybe they'll give Leena a reason to get involved other than being the protagonist's neighbor.

I loved a lot of the core cast of CC and their subplots; Fargo and Nikki is another good one
Out of all the characters, Fargo feels like he’s had the most effort put into him. He gets more development than anybody else, has ties to all of the major factions (Dreamers, demi-humans, and Dragoons), is one of three characters who can steal (and there are so many things worth stealing), and generally has more polish than the others.

Frankly, the plot stops being hyper-relevant to anyone who isn't Fargo or Radius.

I freaked out when I first saw that. The infiltration of Viper Manor is a really cool setpiece overall. Finding the Neo-Epoch blew me away.
I loved a lot of the core cast of CC and their subplots - the Karsh, Riddle, and Dario one being my favorite; the Fargo and Nikki one is another good one - but the main plot about Schala, the Time Devourer, Chronopolis, the Dead Sea, and all that tends to be overly complicated to an autistic degree, though trying to piece it together when I was younger was fun.

Also, I always really hated that the only way to get Glenn is to give up on Kid. Having that be the big decision that splits the game into two routes is pretty retarded. The game berates you for giving up on her, makes you have to re-confirm the decision as if you're making a bad one, and there's really no indication that it's going to be as big a deal as it is.
The Masamune turning into an evil sword was certainly interesting. I liked their part in the plot, and I also liked Radius and Garai's part. Though I remember the boss fight with Garai's ghost being pretty hard. Dario was rough too. Worth it for the Mastermune and it's ridiculous crit rate.

I can imagine a lot of people didn't even realize you can refuse to help Kid. We're all conditioned to accept a but thou must, and repeating it twice just looks like it leads to that. I only knew you could refuse Kid because of the Prima guide, and I knew that was the only way to get Glenn. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wanted him mostly because he was named after the OG chad from Trigger. Something about Kid's character didn't jive with me, so I saved helping her for the second playthrough.

I did devote some time to getting lots of morphs for Sprigg so I could get that bunny girl. I thought it was neat she could mimic Ozzie, Flea, and Slash.

I think they need to up Poshul's role. Poshul's the funniest character they've had by far, she's the key to all of this. Seriously though Leena is a really shiningly bad example of a satellite character.

Username checks out. But yeah Fargo, the story of Zelbess, and Nikki* (hope you picked him to go to the manor with you!) takes up a lot of the plot in the midway point. You can definitely see the ambition that went into this game. It's got a huge, sweeping story, but not all of it comes together well. Serious YMMV about the treatment of the original cast. Looking at you, voice-only-death-scene-Robo.

*I think we all know Pierre w/ full hero set is the best choice.

It just wouldn't be Chrono Cross if you couldn't recruit not just the protagonist's neighbor, but also the village's chief, and an autistic talking dog that doesn't even have a reason to be in the game at all.

if you don't recruit Poshul, she just bounces around an empty field in the first village for the entire game and never actually does anything

Speaking of CC's gigantic cast, I've always found the accent generator interesting, and it always amazes me how mad people get at the optional party members. Yeah, sure, Turnip and Funguy are pointless and don't add much to the game but who gives a shit; you can say the same thing about half the casts in nearly any JRPG, let alone ones like Suikoden. At least CC doesn't penalize you for not recruiting everyone.

I appreciate the sentiment, but it happens way too late in a new game+ to matter.

The other character who comes to mind is Chu-chu from Xenogears.

Suikoden's II cast fill a purpose; whether it's party, managing a castle store or strategic advantage during army combat. There isn't any incentive in CC's beyond "bring Korcha along with aunt Jemima because it would be funny right?"

There don't seem to be any other black people in the Chrono universe, now that you mention it.

I actually don't hate Macha.🤔 Itoi included atypical characters like Tony or Duster to make the world seem more real.

Guile/Pierre/Nikki are awesome companions when getting into the manor.

Of course their grids suck so they're not viable once you get more people.:suffering:

Besides them heretically removing Frog's olde English
It wasn't in the original Japanese though. He was also literally the only one in 600 AD to talk like that (especially since he didn't talk that way before the frogification happened) so it was a weird choice have it in there in the first place. I really don't mind that they removed that and polished the dialog/removed the dumb bits of alcohol (and bisexual) censorship. I get that it was a rush job (one month to do the whole thing, plus have it fall within the classification of the old K-A rating back then), but the polish does help. Not that Trigger was a bad game without it by any means, but it does improve on the experience. Like how originally everyone blacked out after eating soup, or pouring soda on Toma's grave.

All of CC's characters can be used in the party, too. There's really no difference between Turnip and Hoi or Gabocha.

For me it was one of those Ted Woolsey touches that made Frog a little more endearing even if it didn't make sense. No idea if it's just an urban legend but I have heard Kefka is a pretty big standard Final Fantasy villain in the original Japanese and his memorable lines are all Woolseyisms.

Some of the most annoying characters have godlike stats. Sheena, Hai Yo, Augustine, Juan.

I feel a deep pain over Janice, one of the most worthless characters.🥕 Considering how hard she was to get, you would think she'd be the most OP.

Make way for Dissidia’s interpretation, with the farting, butt smacking, and ass wiggling.

The whole Woolsey farrago was completely blown out of proportion by japan-only snobs. At no point while playing CT on snes did I ever wonder "gee, what would the original japense text say in this part?" Then that fan translation group released that romhack with all the -sama bullshit added and it made me embarrassed of playing videogames altogether.

Anytime someone is like "that's not how it was in the Japanese version" I want to tell them to shut the fuck up. Part of the translation process is changing shit to work better for the audience.

That's why you have goofy as fuck "Aerith" and every Metal Gear Solid game after the first one has shit dialogue.
