The showrunners of today grew up with the same shows we watched and like putting references in to the things they enjoyed. It isn't any deeper or more meaningful than that and I wish people would stop trying to turn it into a West vs East thing. Discourse is already tiring enough without random shit like that.I'm beginning to wonder if she interprets people making fun of the Sonic movie with memes as people actually being excited for it.
Has she not noticed that every time an awful live action thing comes out that it gets panned into the dirt?
Also the site won't let me quote Stuck Pooh, but, animators have liked and taken inspiration from anime since the 70s. Why? Because anime is animation. And it was properly serialized and story based while Western cartoons were all episodic, people like that. It's not just happening now all of a sudden because Avatar was popular. Animators are allowed to do more so they do more.
There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from anime, the father of manga Osamu Tezuka based most of his work on old Disney. Animation is about observation, so a lot of people take inspiration from other animation.
