The showrunners of today grew up with the same shows we watched and like putting references in to the things they enjoyed. It isn't any deeper or more meaningful than that and I wish people would stop trying to turn it into a West vs East thing. Discourse is already tiring enough without random shit like that.
People have always liked serialized stories, but the reason they’re becoming preferred in the industry now is because less people are watching TV and binge streaming is the new way people consume media. So episodic shows people can tune into and be able to follow while channel surfing aren’t viable anymore.
The Cuphead show is getting it in the neck because of this. Shame too, since it looks decent.
