People only support freedom, protest, speech, etc. because they think it has a morally good outcome. For the left, protesting against leftist government (especially in a way that the leftist government doesn't approve) has no good moral outcome thus shouldn't be tolerated.
Since the left feels they have the authoritative morality, they don't tolerate any dissent because (to them) all dissent is inherently immoral. This is the backbone of all authoritative, totalitarian societies.

I can tell you exactly how it happened. It became impossible for regular people to raise a family in a city. It's people who grow up in a city that give it its backbone and character. I thought it would be Mackenzie county. If you don't know where it is, it's waayyyy up North in skegland and has some really beautiful spots. La Crete is basically a huge Mennonite colony but it's a nice little town that looks beautiful when the canola fields are in bloom. It's also got a pretty nice sawmill. If you're thinking about making your Internal escape, a lot of places in Northern Canada give you enough space to breathe and be left alone. Of course, your best bet it to try and get into Oil, Gas, or Forestry to try and stick in those areas. But even farms 100kms out from Edmonton can be on the cheap side and provide you with a decent place to settle in, if you're willing to put in the work and live in a mousehole for a few years.
Stay away from acreages and look for actual farms, though. Seeing your neighbour down the road isn't too bad, but definitely don't go for some 2 acre plot where you're surrounded on all sides. And try and find a place with a woodstove (you'll thank me later). If you do find yourself in a town, make sure you talk to the locals before staying and take notes on places, like if you see outhouses are common, it's usually for a reason. Or half the town is empty in the winter because most houses are summer cabins with no insulation. Which, trust me, blows in -48C.
