Grace Lavery / Joseph Lavery & Daniel M. Lavery / Mallory Ortberg - "Straight with extra steps" couple trooning out to avoid "dwindling into mere heterosexuality"

Well, Joe needs to do something to promote his book - Please Miss only has 37 ratings on Good Reads, one rating on Amazon and is currently at #106,481 in best-sellers. Come on Joe, you're never going to get those terves to hate-read your book if you don't give back a little!
The book having one rating on Amazon two weeks out is incredible to me. Even his "fans" couldn't be bothered to leave a rating, let alone review it.

It seems to be a pretty common thing with troons/SJWs. The same shit happened with Brianna Wu's game, which had a TON of free publicity, but sold like crap.

It's all fake, posturing, performative bullshit with those kinds of people. They want to be seen to be saying the right things to the right people, but that's about it.

You'd think that companies would have learned this by now, but nope. How many copies will Joe's book sell in total? How many people will turn out to his book tour events? Shit was always doomed to fail, but they over-estimated the popularity and sway of what's basically an incredibly minor Twitter "celebrity".

Jesse Singal is a massive pussy, but he's right here.

How much of an advance did Joe get for this book? It’s absolutely nowhere — two reviews (maybe), one Amazon review (laughable), a few comments on Goodreads. Hell, most fanfics get more attention than that. Where are his friends? His colleagues? I don’t think the book being difficult has much to do with this — the people around him just don’t seem to care enough to give him a review.

He’s got a book tour in the UK planned, and now he’s backed out of an event that would have given him and his book a lot of attention. Many would argue that all attention is good attention — even if he didn’t do well in the debate, a clever person would have spun it as him defeating his fear of the scary Nazi fascist TERF and standing up for the dignity of the trans community. But he let himself be cowed out of that instead of standing by his decision. Is his publisher even going to bother to pay to send him overseas for a book that’s not selling?

I’m honestly astonished. I’m not very astute at all and I can figure out a way to spin all of this, to get people to review my book. But I think, more and more, that Joe has just become a hedonist. He lives solely for pleasure — the beautiful (in his opinion) designer things he can buy with his money, the people who will kiss his ass, and tell him how clever he is, the people who will fuck him. The book is merely a step along the way: it serves his narcissistic need for attention and the pleasure that comes with it.

Total hedonist. A slave to his own desires, and thus his downfall. His pre-tran pics seem to illustrate a guy still tethered to Earth. Damaged perhaps, but able to access something outside the confines of his own mind. The post-tran pics are a nitrous-filled balloon; he's huffing himself over and over again & will continue to do so unless he hits an actual, non-performative, rock bottom.

Where is Mallory in all of this? Posting about anger, a Pierce Brosnan movie, and mermaids.

As nothing but a rubbernecker, I still wish for her to turn her anger away from her father and toward her husband. Man up, woman! Ditch your faux-wife husband, admit the mistakes (including the weirdo Gucci pantsuits), and be free.

Maybe Mal & Lily are the final survivors of the triad, sans Joe?

Well it's a book most people don't want on their bookshelf. Who wants a book spine that says "staggering penis" out where people can see it? That's a fairly small demographic in most of America I would wager. And it's not one to tuck in with the secret stack of books: the ones by Laura Corn, Dr. Berman, The Joy of Sex, and the Kama Sutra. Where would you store it? Would you donate to the thrift shop when you are done reading? Throw away? Give it to a friend?

The book is totally unreadable. It's not even a 'good' bad book. It's wordy, pretentious dross. I really think that Joe, somewhere deep in the scary place he calls his soul, thinks he is the 21st century Oscar Wilde. He seems fascinated by Wilde, and he may have viewed his book tour as akin to Wilde's lecture tour in the US when he was a young man. Wilde's lectures, where he does discuss gender and art and social presentation, are available online, and they are so beautifully and lucidly written that a 14 year old could read and enjoy them. The idea that the clown Lavery could even begin to emulate that is laughable.

Hell, HE couldn't even be bothered to make a bunch of fake accounts and review it.
A lot of book and PR companies will take care of this and there's a whole industry out there of reviewers who will do it just for the free copies and expanding their brand.

It'd be funny if nobody actually wants to read the book or if the companies decided that it wasn't worth sending out the free ebook copies. I'm imagining some earnest reviewers starting it and going NOPE. Many will try to review everything to keep in good relations with the PR companies but nobody actually expects them to literally do it.

We know from the Good Reads comments that they actually sent out a bunch of copies since the commenters mention it. I'd assume that in this case, most that got the free book just put it in a pile or gave up reading when they realised that this was pretentious rubbish. That so few can even be bothered to pretend to like it says something in itself.

If even 1/4 of the people at his Extremely Glamorous Release Party had left a review, he'd see like a 300% increase in engagement for his book.

Fortunately, I don't think the publisher is usually on the hook for travel expenses. Joe wants to go to England for several months; the book is just a convenient excuse.

Probably he switched agents because they already sensed doom and cordially asked him to find another rep more suited to his unique sensibilities.

I so wish we could see that "difficult" Zoom meeting with the troon mafia, but here is the next best thing:

Joe has also just released an extensive explanation via another third-party mouthpiece. Sounds like the Bindel debate is out as well.

"my credibility as a commentator on contemporary trans politics has been utterly shot"
withdrawing from trans twitter
transphobia is antisemitic
claims people sent his mom the pictures of him and mallory, falsely claims they were from a private instagram account
"I have felt my sobriety pressured the last week or so" (it's a freelapse miracle)
considered canceling the UK tour but FUCK IT

This is the alleged Twitter account of the mom:

Two people posted the pics under the thread that I saw.

She did interact with a Mallory post in 2020.

Whew, lads.

The truth is Lavery got onto that zoom call and was confronted with the stark unflattering reality of a line up of his community. The sight of all those men with bad make up, stubble, wigs, bald patches, and the sound of a bunch of angry men talking at him must have given him a jolt.

Any glamorous fantasy would have evaporated pretty quickly.

I think he's had such a shock at the reality of himself reflected back at him in that zoom that he has to pull away to hide from it.

He has seen the truth of the fantasy he's trying to ram down people's throats and he realised the futility of it.
