I'm British, I don't like NATO either, but his response to an expanded 'security pact' is to justify the need for it in the first place by invading a sovereign nation. You don't shit where you eat, Europe should be off limits.

I would say he thinks he's a new Tsar and can expand Russia militarily like happened in the past. He's fine with threatening European stability because he doesn't think the rest of the world is willing to stand up to him over what amounts to small land grabs, and if they do, he thinks he can take them on.
