President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Watching the reactions to this whole Russian offensive news cycle as perceived by people who have zero skin in the game has made it very clear who actually pays attention to whats happening and who's opinion on the matter amounts to low effort shitposting.

The administration/deep state isn't going to start a war with Russia to bolster Biden's popularity because that's retarded, and He's already benefited from this because all but the most hawkish people outside of the US/UK governments (and smaller nations like the Baltic states and Poland) though a Russian offensive would be limited to permanently reinforcing the separatist regimes in the eastern Ukraine. And that predicted offensive that everybody wan't sure was going to happen has become an inevitable reality as of a few days ago.

The US and UK governments that were parroting the warnings their intelligence agencies were giving them are suddenly looking a lot more reasonable in comparison to European leaders who were taking a much more conciliatory position with Russia before they announced they recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as independent nations (which both have territory now "illegally" occupied by the Ukrainian army) and the deployment of "peacekeeping forces" to protect them. You hear this sentiment all over foreign language social media where its discussed.

This expanded offensive into territory currently under the control of Kiev might not happen, but the relevant powers will take this warning a lot more seriously than they were taking the warning of less major incursions just a week ago. And Europe as a whole will drift closer the US's position regarding Russia, they've already made economic moves that were non-starters before.
They won't start it, but they'll sure as hell benefit from it. I don't know how you observe the last few decades of American history and see war as not being good for business. Albeit most of those wars were against tinhorn dictators/warlords, not the 2nd largest nuclear power. After the last decade of whipping themselves into a frenzy over the Ruskies they might not see that for what it is.

Agree with everything else you said.
Good, bring it on, this country deserves to get it's shit pushed in.

The military is supposed to be real Woke with tons of diversity, good, send those people out to die, we need a culling.

Maybe it'll be enough to get us to pop our heads out of our asses, the Woke left are going to look like such fools when their boy gets us into an even bigger war than Dubya, but at least the Tweets aren't mean!
If shit gets real they'll switch to a wartime military and the same type of guys who've fought all the serious wars will be enlisted.

"Again" would imply that it ever happened before, which it didn't. Putin's ambition here is to stop NATO from expanding to within a few hours drive of Moscow. I doubt he cares about annexing Slovenia.
The last time we underestimated a Russian leader's ambitions we wound up with all of Eastern Europe behind the Iron Curtain. Putin will be aiming to put as much territory under his control as is practical. And opposition from the West will play a role in determining just what is and isn't practical, no matter how much anyone likes or dislikes it.

Ahah! I knew there was a reason sales of uboat went through the roof in canada. Those evil canucks are using it to train for fighting for putin

That said, looks like the shooting has started

There are idiots suggesting we invade Kamchatka and Russian Siberia. In winter. From Alaska. How do our more reasonable Forum liberals survive the absolute black hole of dum that is the American Left?
The American left and the American right are both "black holes of dum", and you survive it by telling yourself the dummest voices are the loudest and most people are actually more reasonable.

Don't worry, Biden said he'll put sanctions on Russia if Putin escalates.

(Which really means nothing, since the US doesn't make anything because we get all of our shit from China).

With Corona-chan in the rearview mirror, the Biden administration is going to need a new stick to beat citizens with to keep the WEF's agenda marching forward. WWIII would be a good excuse to make sure The Great Reset continues. It would be crazy if Russia hired the internet terrorist known as 4Chan to hack our defense systems and cause us to launch nukes on ourselves.

New Delhi:
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today a military operation in Ukraine to defend separatists in the east of the country, called the Donbas region. "I have made the decision of a military operation," he said in a surprise statement on television shortly before 6 am. Weeks of intense diplomacy to avert war and the imposition of Western sanctions on Russia failed to deter Mr. Putin, who had massed between 150,000 and 200,000 troops along the borders of Ukraine. Russia also called on Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms, and justified the invasion by claiming a "genocide" in Ukraine's east. US President Biden immediately warned of "consequences" for Russia and said the world would "hold Russia accountable" for its actions. He said Russia's move would cause "catastrophic loss of life and human suffering", while NATO's chief condemned Russia's "reckless and unprovoked attack' on Ukraine.
