As someone else described, nuclear is one of the most carbon-friendly energy sources available, so it makes very little sense from the climate perspective; there is no 'free energy' system that gives you something for nothing. A lot of the anti-nuclear hysteria that is present in the West traces back to groups like Greenpeace, which received covert support from the KGB in Soviet times.
The Soviets did not like Western countries having nuclear power stations because, ultimately, any nation with nuclear power is just a step away from nuclear armament. There is a related concept called
nuclear latency. The Soviets hoped that, by propagating anti-nuclear propaganda in adversarial states, it could make it more difficult for them to achieve Japan-tier nuclear latency. Germany shutting down their nuclear plants is a kind of nuclear disarmament by proxy.
Additionally, Germany has undertaken a huge transition to so-called 'green energy' like solar panels and windmills, called their Energiewende, which has been a huge failure. Hundreds of billions of dollars blown on basically nothing since 2000, with little to nothing to show for it, except an increased reliance on coal and natural gas due to the shuttering of nuclear plants. Probably a grand scam to enrich monied interests involved in that heavily subsidized non-viable industry.
