IIRC there was still active nuclear research being conducted there. Most of the exclusion zone's abandoned but there were still some federal workers at Chernobyl itself.

3 of the 4 reactors are still activated and overhauled to avoid the safety issues of the RBMK design.

It still provides most of Kiev's power.

This is very smart to grab it early to keep it out of attrition based combat (which could breach the containment shield and cause Chernobyl 2) and control power to Kiev.

The nukes were useless. All Ukraine had was ICBMs and the minimum range on those things is thousands of miles. They would literally have only been able to target Russia's Far East region (i.e. Sakhalin) with them. Well, they also had some dumb bombs too but those would've been irrelevant here. Regardless, they did not have the expertise or facilities needed to maintain them. Please, I am begging you, stop pushing this dumb meme.

I think it's more so a good strategic fob location 100km from the capital of ukraine. Also, Ukraine won't rocket or use explosives against them there cause of the huge risk to leak nuclear matrerial and produce nuclear dust. May give russian troops there a chance of cancer, but good fob safe from bombardment.
